A Darien man was arrested Saturday after he beat a man flirting with his wife at Darien Social, police said.
William Parsley, 48, of Wrenfield Lane, was charged with third-degree assault.
Officers were dispatched to the restaurant at 11:17 p.m. and found a large crowd in front of Darien Social. In the middle of the crowd was the 21-year-old victim, whose shirt was covered in blood and had scratches all over his face, police said.
The victim told police that a middle-aged, bald man in a green shirt had punched him, police said. Another officer was speaking with the suspect -- Parsley -- at the rear of the restaurant, according to the report.
The victim said he and a 22-year-old friend -- both from Fairfield -- were "flirting heavily" with women at the bar, according to the report. Parsley was the husband of one of the women with whom the men were flirting, according to police.
At one point, the victim's friend went over to Parsley, put his arm around his shoulders and started talking to him, police said the restaurant's security surveillance footage showed. Then Parsley started to poke the man in the chest and pushed him away, when the victim tried to intervene to break up the argument, police said.
Parsley punched the victim several times and thew him to the ground and continued to punch him, police said.
The victim, according to the report, told officers that he was being flirtatious with women knowing their husbands were in the bar and that he knew he "probably deserved the beating," but still wanted to press charges.
Post 53 responded to the scene and the victim was transported to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.
Police spoke with several witnesses, including one of the bartenders who said she asked Parsley why he punched the victim, police said. The witness told police Parsley said he punched the man because he was "messing with his wife," according to the report.
Parsley's 47-year-old wife, who was also interviewed by police, said the two Fairfield men were annoying her during the night and she tried to avoid them several times, police said.
She told police that her husband was defending her honor by reacting the way he did, according to the report.
Parsley was released on a promise to appear in court.
