I wish I could relate
My roommate typed up a 1500 word research paper freshman year the night before it was due - including quotes, sources, and all. Paper was due at 8 am and he started at 11 PM.
Got an 94 A.
I spent a week typing mine up and compiling sources but pulled an 88 B.
Still netted an A in the course but I was salty as hell.

On the topic, I hated English. I hate subjective courses, period. Give me something like Biology or Math anyday - something that there is no grey area in - you either know it, or you don't. Professors are only human, and they're not immune from exercising bias. Whether or not your English prof likes you, had an upset stomach while they were grading your paper, had just gotten into with a spouse, or read the best paper they'd ever seen before they got to yours, all of that can play a factor in the grade you receive. I knocked English out and never looked back.
