Anyone on here been held back? What about your family/kids? Do you think its efficient?

I ask because my friends son was held back this year and it was a really tough decision. He's 8 and I think he's still angry about it. Teachers are saying so far he's been kind of withdrawn. But he has been turning in homework, on time and correct so :yeshrug:

You have to fail everything to be held back in my state. So if it's the same thing, then sure. You didn't pass anything so u deserve to get held back.

Teachers out here won't even hold you back unless the parent(s) ask that its done.

They'll give all types of extra credit and even ask that they do a few weeks of summer school and they'll pass them with a 70.

Retentions make their numbers look bad, bad numbers mean less funding and bonuses, also means that teacher will have some explaining to do.

I got held back in the 8th grade :francis: I was a dikkhead for ending up with summer school that year, and I missed 5 days of the course because I got really sick. They wouldn't let me take the class I needed with that many absences so I had to repeat. The thing that hurt the most was having to watch all your friends that you grew up with since kindergarten with move on to the next grade without you :mjcry:

I think I got held back in 3rd grade, I remember in 4th grade an old classmate told everyone I failed 3rd grade 3 times, didn't know what she meant but then I realized that was why I was in Special Ed.

School just didn't interest me back then. I was in Special Ed but I was probably the least slow person in the class, little black kids were jumping on desks like frogs and I was doing my work.

Cacs will give up on black students very easily and recommend they go to the slow class, that's what mom had to go through with me.

Very true. They tried to do that with me but my parents never followed thru with it, thank god. I maybe daydreamed a lot in class but I damn sure wasn't slow. I just didn't give af about school.

did either one of you feel (or even remember) the school tried their best or that they wrote you off?

Another one of my friends was held back too, but thats because he claims he was lazy

No kid should be held back so young. I think the only time a kid can be considered to stay back a grade is middle school and high school.

If the kid attended class and did the work then I don't see what the problem is. The school system is extremely flawed in that it assumes that every child learns at the same pace, and can only learn certain subjects and information at a certain age. Not all 8 year olds are going to be able to understand and process information the same.

A lot of teachers try to get parents to get their kids on drugs and shyt. They tried that shyt with my lil bro. Early on they tried to put me in smaller, slower classes in elementary and middle school.

By the time middle school and high school came, I was far surpassed in knowledge and understanding compared to my peers. I could write extremely well, my comprehension was off the charts, at the age of 15 when most kids are wondering about mundane things I was working and improving upon myself. Discussing and pondering on all types of topics. Always learning.
