Getting my first suit

Im 22 and in the market for my first suit. Something fitted, not one of those Easter Sunday joints i used to wear back in middle school

I heard Jos. A Banks has sales so i went and got fitted. Im a 42R but the guy said my shoulders are too broad for a 42. So we sized up to a 44 and he said it was still a little tightMy shoulders are too big for my chest size and my arms are 16.5-17 inches

He said my only option is to deal with the 44 being a little tight, then jokingly goes "I guess the gym is working against you huh big fella?" Im just sitting therei guess

I just want a good starter suit but what are my options?

Starter suit? Men's Warehouse / K&G Warehouse / Jos. A Banks / whatever your cities got type spot.

Buy the 44 but don't have them tailor it there. Take it to a professional tailor in your town. Check Yelp for reviews.

I have the same problem as you. Broad shoulders and my arms are too long. So my sizing is all over the place. A good tailor will take care of that.

After your first couple starter suits go buy yourself something in the middle of the road. Once you got some money coming in go get yourself a fully canvassed Canali or Zegna.

no such thing as a starter suit, dont bother wasting your hard earned dough in those low end brands that wont last 2-3 years like jos a banks

spend some money and invest in yourself.

zegna is a great brand like dude above said... Armani, Paul Smith, and Burberry make excellent suits that will last a lifetime

the key to any suit is getting it tailored, never wear it off the rack... Never

get some dope Allen Edmond shoes and belt and you are set

hit up Neiman Marcus last call, or off Saks, they always running good deals

You have to get an athletic cut suit.
This will limit the number of suits you can choose from.
Go to another place, like Men's Warehouse and see what they have.

4 years later still looks great on me

If you're gonna wear this suit a lot, maybe get some quality.... but I like my H&M suit. I might buy another one. It fits great, didn't even need to tailor it.

Jos A Bank/Men's Warehouse are cheap suits IMO. I would stay away from them except for getting fitted

As I said in another thread, after you get your measurements you need to find out what fit you prefer (slim, regular or a more relaxed fit). I would suggest you go to Macy's where you can get a good cross section of fits and see what you like. I wouldn't spend any more than $150-$200 on this suit...get a good black or charcoal suit and build around that.

H&M and $30-40 worth of alterations will have you looking kid, and their suits will last a few years.
Know your proper measurements, and go to J. Crew, maybe $300-$400 for a well-fitting suit.
I like Thom Browne and Hugh & Crye for shirts, with J. Crew coming in at a close third, though money may be an issue.
I got a Tom Ford spread collar shirt for like $90 on grailed once, and it was fairly cheap to get darted so it fit properly.
Allen Edmonds for some brogues, GH Bass & Co. for a good solid pair of loafers, hit up thetiebar.com for a nice solid tie and a pocket square and should be good.
