whats wrong with african american vernacular tho? no one says anything about the Jamaicans. an asian person who sounds Jamaican would get praised out there. In fact many chinese live there and sound just like them but no one laughs or gives the its only us that do this.

There seems to be an underlining issue here.

AA vernacular called by cacs Ebonics is largely made up words, words used out of context and broken English. I use it all the time and apparently you do too but let's not romanticize it. Not saying that you are but that's where this can lead. Broken languages eventually turn into formal languages (like how English is broken Latin) if enough people support the language. The question is are we willing or able to do that in our current system?

Since we live in a system of white domination they set the rules and one of the main rule's is 'speak standard English' or else. Or else what? Or else this - those who don't speak standard English have basically 3 options to make a living (1) be self employed and deal only with people who speak just like them, (2) get an unorthodox job (as a singer rapper, artist etc.), or (3) get a low wage job where how you speak doesn't matter and be poor. Right now there is no formal culture behind this way of speaking and at this point in history (fortunately or unfortunately) not many people take it seriously. It may develop into another language in the future but for now it's just another distraction because some people who use it never learn standard English and are held back in the system that we live in and under. I'd say to anyone who only wants to speak this way - master the system's language and it's set culture first and then it may give us leverage to set our own culture. Either that or we should agree to complete segregation where areas that want to use this way of speaking formally can flourish.

You used Jamaicans as an example but they speak standard English. I've been to Jamaica several times and they speak just as well as any English speaking country in the world. When it comes to doing business that 'patois' is out the damn window - and they have their own country. What do I mean? I mean that they could technically make Patois the official language of Jamaica but they don't and they won't imo because I think 1. its not respected enough 2. they know the world is hard enough as it is without trying to make it harder by 'forcing yourself to be different.' I could be wrong and I'm open to correction on this point.

Nevertheless, this struggle with language (should we speak one way or another all the time) happens with every sub culture that has their own way of speaking up until they become the dominant culture. Until we as blacks have the power to set our own terms we have to play their game, and even though we love our way of speaking, society forces us to conform to the larger group.
