Taking my time with this game... but just reunited with "a ghost". That whole scene had me like :ohhh:

But I kinda suspect breh was still alive, he was too prominent in her flashback sequences without properly fleshing out his character

OK, I've completed the game. I've beaten the story, all the duels, gotten all the armor and charms, etc. I'm logged at 62 Hours as I write this

This game is absolutely AMAZING. Last year, I decided to go back and play GoT to fill the time before Black Myth Wukong released, and I commented on here that I forgot how great that game was. The last time I played GoT before last year was when it came out over 4 years from that point, in 2020. I remember beating it, and liking it, but i never let it settle. I went back to FF7 Remake and TLOU2 (as you'll remember, GoT, FF7 Remake and TLOU2 all released in that April - July time frame). Anyway, when I played it last year, it blew my mind how fun it was. I couldn't put it down. The combat, the story, the characters, Tsushima as a whole, as well as Iki Island. It was all fantastic. To me, that game was a genuine video game classic. Sure it suffered from repetitive side missions, and some QoL improvements that could make it a more smooth game (searching for trappers, merchants, bowyers, etc, too many tracking side missions), but overall I thought GoT was art. I still do. I actually beat that game 3 times over, completing the entire Tsushima map. I would then go on to beat Iki Island twice, because it was so much fun to play.

Before Yotei released, I finished the main story of GoT and Iki Island one last time not only to replay a great game before the next installment releases, but to also as a refresher for the controls, so i could feel comfortable going into Yotei. I told myself before the game released that I'd play on Lethal difficulty. I took off work this entire week, so i had nothing but time in between binge watching the Fresh Prince, King of the Hill, and NBA preseason....

When I tell you this is one of the best games I've ever played, I mean it. Personally, i believe it's the best Ps5 game ever. I'm not exaggerating. I think it's better than GoW, Astro Bot, Spider-Man 2, FF7 Rebirth, Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin, Black Myth Wukong, you name it. I CANNOT stress how incredible this game is. It's truly a peak gaming experience. It has everything: excellent combat, a great story, outstanding characterization, excellent visuals, excellent voice-over performances. It's a game that fires on all cylinders. Sucker Punch deserves so much credit for what they managed to achieve. So let's get into it...

What I Like About Ghost of Yotei:
-(EVERYTHING)
-Atsu is so fukking dope. I loved playing as her, and watching her story unfold. You can add her to the list of great female characters we have gotten this era (both Atsu and Oyuki). Her characterization of being a woman hellbent on revenge and opening up and realizing that there's more to life than revenge was a pleasure to experience. Both Jubei and Oyuki as great complimentary characters. People have been talking about the "predictability" of a revenge story, like that's supposed to change that it was well-told. Atsu and her crew were fleshed out so well that it made the story more interesting. It was great to sit down and just watch this all play out. Not to mention the villains were excellent. Saito is a cruel b*stard, and it's a theme that he's very vindictive, willing to excessively punish anyone who crosses him over anything, no matter how small.
-The combat is greatly improved compared to GoT. I thought it would take longer for me to get used to all the different choices and how they match up with different enemies. But I was able to get it relatively quick and switching between all 5 weapons made the fights enjoyable. Not only that, but each weapon has it's own special attack (Tringle + Circle). Heavenly Strike from GoT is back, but there are 4 other moves for each other weapon.
-Stealth is more or less the same, but they expanded on it. For starters, the game doesn't MAKE you choose stealth or fighting head-on. You can choose which method makes you most comfortable. I picked stealth because I love the Ghost/Onryo motif, but when i was caught, i just got my weapons ready and got to fighting. Your wolf companion is another layer of depth. you can do joint takedowns with her, or stagger your foe with a sake jar and she'll catch the foe by surprise and maul him. Doing wolf den missions was a favorite of mine. After each one, you unlock a chance to improve your bond with yourwolf companion
-Since I played on Lethal the entire time, I can say this game is delightfully difficult. The grunts are much tougher in this game compared to Tsushima. I even think that they are tougher than the grunts on Iki Island (who were a step up difficulty-wise compared to the mainland Tsushima enemies). I died COUNTLESS times in my 62 Hours of play, most times to the mob fights. Some Saito Camps took me up to 5 tries because if you make ONE mistake, you're a dead man. But they also switched it up. You have to complete certain objectives to liberate the Saito camps. Some times, you'll track the leader down and beat him as he's mobbed up with his subordinates. Or you'll have to rescue a captive who will fight alongside you as you beat the reinforcements. It's a little bit of variety that I enjoyed. Also BTW, the enemies read your inputs and attack you when your animation is starting up. So forexample, if you want to use Oni Flame against certain enemies, once you press R1 to use it, they'll attack you mid-animation, and on Lethal, you're probably a dead man. So you have to be more strategic and use certain weapons at the right time. Maybe stun them with the sand attack before using Oni Flame is a solution I found. My point is, you cant just decide to throw out some weapons whenever you want.
-Boss fights were challenging. It took me a few tries to beat just about every single boss, both main story and sidequest. I'm proud to say I beat every single boss on Lethal. It was a grind some times, but I got it done. Takezo and Saito were the toughest
-Tracking missions are pretty much gone. I remember only two or three total in my 62 hours of playing. Instead, the missions are much more varied
-The new Bounty system was really well done. Tracking them all down and beating them in duels or in the
-The new weapons are nice as well. Not only the 5 weapons you master as you progress in the story, i'm also talking about the quickfire weapons (sand, Kunai, pistol, etc). Way of the Flame is back, but called Oni Flame this time. Old classics like the Heavy Arrow and explosive arrow are a welcome sight as well.
-The Loading is pretty much non-existent, same as GoT. I remember being impressed with the loading times on the PS4 version of Tsushima in 2020. This game is much larger and still, the game loads quickly. It shows you how powerful the PS5's SSD is (I played on the original PS5 btw)
-Quality of life improvements, mostly the ability to go straight to a bounty poster, armorer, bowyer, shopkeep etc. instead of searching for them like in GoT. Also when you clear an ememy camp, they move all the unlooted treasure to a nearby spot so you don't have to search around. You can sense that the developers respected the players' time with these improvements
-The soundtrack is fantastic. It gave the game a very cinematic feel. Toma Otowa deserves a ton of credit for composing such a masterful soundtrack

What I didn't like about the game:
-Fox Puzzles. That's really it. I played for 62 Hours and I couldn't think of anything else that I didn't really enjoy.

Overall, this game is as close to perfect as you can get. From start to finish it was an enjoyable play, and I can't wait until NG+ and Legends comesout so I can play those modes. When Clair Obscur came out, I said the only game that can compete with it for my personal Game of The Year was Yotei. And I have to say, this game is my Game of The Year. It's a modern masterpiece in gaming, storytelling, and voice acting. I was so truly impressed with it.

It's a 9.8/10 for me. Masterful game. Anyone with a PS5 NEEDS to play this. No exceptions. PLAY THIS GAME. IDK if they're gonna have DLC but I'm going to play whatever they release. I love this game!

RIP to the man Jubei though. I wish he didn't die. shyt got me feeling worse than when Taka died. When Atsu told Jubei Kiku wouldn't be alone, it had me like :mjcry: at 2am. While I'm at it, RIP to my guy Taka. He was too good for that world. :mjcry:
