It’s a probability scenario called the Monty Hall problem. Counterintuitive, but the answer is always pick again and switch the “door”.

without that info she should treat the 300 as a slightly nicer consolation prize than the ones her "friends" "won" and try for the real one

To satisfy their own interests 2/3 women will let you down.
1/3 women don't really care about someone else money. They have no sense of the value of money available to them. They easily succumb to peer pressure.
1/3 women will come home and give you bother off something you had nothing to do with. They won't tell you how they dumb ass was duped by someone they thought was acting on their best interests. You only have to suffer in silence.
