A teacher can be easily replaced temporarily because *someone* has to be in front of those kids when class starts. That doesn't mean that the person will be an effective teacher. Sure you could be dropped in a 3rd grade classroom, it doesn't mean you could properly convey the knowledge to the kids, let alone if we start talking high school physics, chemistry, calculus, world history, English, etc. The difference between a substitute teacher and a great, *real* teacher is day and night.

I can do my own taxes, that doesn't make me a good accountant.

I can defend myself in court, that doesn't make me a good lawyer.

I already made that point about how that doesn't mean somebody is a good lawyer. My point is the ease to step in on these scenarios and mimic a "good teacher" , replace a "good teacher", is far easier than it is do replace a doctor, lawyer, and etc. The bar is way lower to become a teacher and it's easier to fly under the radar as one , and honestly being a good or great teacher can have nothing to do with your knowledge. To be good or great in other professions do require some level of formal education nd knowledge.

When you tie performance solely to performance of the students, not only do you ignore certain factors, but you lead to things like that cheating scandal in ATL.
It doesn't need to only be based on performance, but some measure of performance should be considered

And this goes back to my point I made earlier, it's all apples and oranges. One could argue being a great auto mechanic is tougher than being a great lawyer, being a champion boxer is tougher than being a CEO of a company, etc. Comparing two completely different professions based on "difficulty" is ridiculous to do in the first place. What can't be argued is the effect of the good teachers on students' outcomes, and there is quantitative data that supports this.

This does not equate to teachers deserving higher pay, determining a good teacher has many variables in it. My point is teachers are not a rare commodity deserving of high pay. Anybody lobbying for this are teachers that just want more money or fools. We can run similar studies for the effects of "good *insert job* " on outcomes of whatever and see this. Higher pay is not going to equal an influx of good teachers anyway, not sure why people even think this.

I hate to keep busting out the data, but there is study that shows higher teacher pay leads to better teachers and higher student performance.

Education International - Education pays a high price for low teacher pay

Of course, I'm not just saying throw money at teachers blindly. I would say a combination of higher pay and raising the barrier of entry into teaching would definitely increase the supply of great teachers. Money attracts the best and the brightest, and motivates people. Until that happens, I don't want to hear people complaining about our K-12 educational system.

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/07/n...bout-half-the-students-are-homeless.html?_r=1

'At 46 New York City schools, at least a third of all students were homeless in the fall of the last school year.'

"At a school like P.S. 188, what does success look like?

On the standardized state tests taken every year, its scores are flatly disappointing. Only 9 percent of its students met state standards in English last year, compared with 30 percent of students citywide. Just 14 percent of children scored at grade level in math, less than half of the citywide rate of 35 percent."

"There are supposed to be 27 children in Harold Boyd IV’s second-grade classroom, but how many of them will be there on a given day is anyone’s guess.

Since school began in September, five new students have arrived and eight children have left. Two transferred out in November. One who started in January was gone in April. A boy showed up for a single day in March, and then never came back. Even now, in the twilight of the school year, new students are still arriving, one as recently as mid-May.

At Public School 188, on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, students churn relentlessly in and out. Administrators estimate that nearly half the students enrolled at the school do not last the full year."

probably the toughest job if you're working at a shytty school...

From baby sitting these bad ass kids. I was a teachers Aide only making 11 an hour and I felt like I should be getting 30 just off the stress alone.
