My best friend was told something similar by his own mother. However, his mama grew up with a mama who beat the hell out of her and told her she wouldn't be shyt. Apparently, her own mother had the same upbringing with her grandmother. Thus, it was a generational thing.

My friend has since become a doctor and his mother legitimately feels some type of way about him being successful. Can only describe it as jealousy. That, and him being audacious enough to succeed even though she told him he couldn't do it.

Until I knew someone going thru it personally, it'd be crazy for me to ever think of a parent not wanting her own child to succeed, but it does happen; yet, that speaks more to her own issues than anything you're doing.

OP, did your mother achieve her own dreams in life?

Americans are obsess with fantasy. Always want life to be a giant party. If you think being an engineer is boring you’re not ready for the music industry. Worse than working retail. Some nikkas get signed and never even speak to they label for years and can’t even put out shyt. Most aren’t ready to be rappers, producers, etc. it’s very hard work.

:stopitslime:have you actually worked as an engineer? you know how depressing and mundane that shyt is

i'll still be an engineer but once i start seeing real money from music it's adios

Doesn't have to be mundane and boring. You can work towards building your own business up one day.

That’s kind of fukked up if she had to tell you like that, verbatim. Usually the family is a little more tact about how they crush your spirit...

This game is about connection and hustle more than talent. Maybe your mom sees you talk about your talent and feels like you rely too much on it. Maybe she doesn't see the drive and hustle in you. Do you owe her money? Did she co-sign your student loans?

Or maybe she's a hater :yeshrug:

I have to agree with this. When’s the last time you ever heard someone say they wanted to just make a few hundred thousand off of their careers? Most people trying to be millionaires and the millionaires are trying to make most people broke (or make sure the millionaires convince the non to give them their money)

Above the fray.
Well, your parents were looking out for your best interest (the best way they knew how) by steering you toward a STEM field. You obviously have the aptitude for it to have completed your bachelor's in EE.

The late Bernie Mac once said "Life ain't a dress rehearsal". This is the one life you have, be realistic about your situation at all times, but by all means follow your passion.

Grind,
You should show your parents an article about the late Combat Jack. I think his story will help them understand what you are going through better than anything you can say to them. And will help you understand their points as well.

Cornell, Georgetown Law grad..practicing attorney...got burned out...stopped practicing law..followed his true passion and created successful media platform....died early from colon cancer.

He was diagnosed about 2 months ago and died yesterday. We all have to go, but this man was able to achieve financial stability and take care of his family and then do what he really wanted to do

This is true...to OP @GrindtooFilthy I'm opening a studio too...how's your credit???...You need credit...I got charge offs on my shyt so banks in Maryland won't allow you to open a Business Account with charge offs on your credit report...so I gotta clean up my credit to open a Business Account in order to apply for a business credit card with access to 50K or more...can always apply for multiple business credit cards...that's how it's done...then use the business credit to build and fund your studio!!!...Good Luck Bro!!!...:salute:
