my daughter has a tablet but everything that's not educational is blocked. if we're out and about my wife usually gives our daughter her cellphone when she asks. she doesn't ask me for mine because she knows she's going to get the :usure::camby: "better play with your thumbs"

I'll admit i did it with my oldest son for a few months till i realised how badly it affected his behaviour spending hours on end on an ipad. Stopped it immediately when his school told me how his behaviour changed drastically and he became so anti social. Once i took it off him cold turkey, and his teacher even called me a few weeks later to say how well he's doing.

Not just what has been said but the race is on. Get these kids to do stuff. The younger years are the years where the foundation is laid. My mom read books to me and challenged me to push the boundaries of my education. my learning and understanding. I grew up in inner-city Detroit in a single parent household. I wasn't expected to make it, but in many respects, I have. Your upbringing has so much to do with the type of person you are. I look at so many people that look like me (black male) that have no hope, no prospects. My mom took my SNES away from me for 9 months when I got a D on my report card. She wasn't for any bullshyt from me. Back to the kids, I do have games on my tablet for the kids like where is my water and minecraft, but i also have apps for sight words and other educational things. If not for anything else. ABCmouse.com is less than 10 bucks a month. There are ways to make the computer usage fun and educational. I am of the mindset that these kids need to not be afraid of technology because that is how people get left behind. My daughters going into high school have been given ipads for school. They took their state test on the ipad. This technology is second nature because their dad put them in front of a computer when they were less than 1 and was not afraid to let them fukk things up so that they can work things out in their head as well. There is a delicate balance here but it ultimately starts with parents being parents. Tablets, computers and teachers aren't responsible for raising your children, you are.

My moms did the exact same thing to me for about the same reason (I also forged her signature on the progress report leading up to the bad report card). Moms instilled a punish/reward system for me with grades. If I made honor roll, I'd get a worthy gift from her for it (usually a game or something) and if I got bad grades, she take shyt away. So I'm bringing my kids up the same way.

Was never allowed to play during weeknights as a kid. If homework was done/piano practice completed, then I'd get maybe an hour tops, lol.
Weekends wasn't a big deal. Was allowed to play as long as I wanted but I had rather be outside playing sports all day with my homebrehs.
I do remember waking up early as fukk though, like 5am on weekday mornings (before Moms woke up).. just so that I could get some play in on the OG Ken Griffey for SNES. That game was just too :banderas:

:to:

I got NO incentives for good grades or good behavior. :why:

Mom hit me with the :childplease: "You're not starving, I buy you clothes, I don't abuse you. You better give me B's and A's."

She bought me a $200 bike in the summer when I scored pretty high on some standardized test when I was middle school but all the other luxuries I got growing up was from a father I haven't even seen since I was six years old :dead:

My parents were fukking a$$holes, especially my mom. All of my consoles were in a big fukking chest with a lock on it.

What's funny, is that when my mom's use to work Woolworth, she was the one who bought me the nes, Sega and snes. My dad just bought me games randomly. I think I played more at my friends house than my own.

My sister does that reward/punishment philosophy with her kids. My parents were more of the 'you fukk around with school and your grades, ill kill you' like minded. They were like asian parents - impossible to please.

I do give incentives for grades while I never received them. For reports, if you get on the A/B honor roll, I'll give you the dollar amount for your grade. So, if you got that as a 7th grader, I'll give you 7 dollars. Get all A's, then $14. My children's worlds are still small enough to that this amount of money means something and they aren't looking at me like :comeon:. Since my twins are entering high school and it's game time, I've upped the ante. Same thing for A/B honor roll but $25 for all A's. I have a second grader as well and she is already up on the grading thing and is quick to show me her report card.

my wife lets my daughter watch curious george DVD's in the backseat when she's in the car. however, when they are in my car, usually I dont bring her DVD player, so she gotta just ride the old fashioned way and talk to daddy sleep or listen to the radio.

my other daughter always be in the back playing games on her iphone while we in the car regardless of who's car.

Man... If my mom didn't go to work my childhood would have been boring as hell. I used to get made fun of for her strictness. Brehs were calling me a convict because of how hard my mother went with the lock downs. :dead:

see I'm the opposite of that parent. I don't place restrictions on what my kid can watch or when she can play games (unless there's homework to be done). when I don't make a big deal out of it, she plays it at a regular rate. normally like on the weekend like saturday morning, but typically not during the week. even in the summer.

I balance it well I think. Putting you child in front of a desktop is the way to go instead of a TV or tablet. There is much more educational entertainment and it familiarizes them with a computer environment early.

But letting the TV, computer, tablet, or console babysit your kids all day is shytty parenting. You got to push exercise, connection with nature, arts and TLC.

I've had my moments of laziness though. I won't lie.

my oldest has tv, ipad, iphone, desktop computer and ps3 in her room. she uses the computer for schoolwork exclusively. uses the ipad when going in the car, and watches tv in the evening.

this summer she is doing golf camp in the day and has cheerleading on saturday afternoons so she kinda busy. when it's nice outside, she will come home and play in the back yard with the dogs and her sister most likely or run thru the sprinkler.

Lived with my grandparents. No rules as far as games goes. Could play all day everyday. Didn't matter if it was a school night or not. Had permanent purple thumbs round the time Genesis was hot. :heh:

That said, I basically lived outside every weekend and summer. I never got in trouble and i was a straight A student. I realized at a young age that I HAD to be in school for 8 hours so i usually did my homework at school so i could fukk around all night (till 9 pm in kid time :russ:).

I probably won't be nearly as lenient with my kid. I realize that I'm an anomaly to the rule. I don't thnk too much gaming is good for you at all.
