Act 1 in the original was fleshed out way better.
Why would I give a fucck about his wife dying five minutes into the movie.
And they didn’t even explain the concept behind the gladiator fights before rushing into the 1st one.

Super trash. Terrible character development. Rushed. Actors with no charisma outside of Denzel. Garbage dialog that they thought would be Classic
Finally saw this and yeah this was mid. First time I put it on I turned it off out of boredom. But if they were going to connect this to the first movie they should have went all out. Lucius should have been on some "I am the rightful heir" shyt throughout this movie. His gladiator reveal should have been similar to Maximus. Instead they made him a smug brooding breh with mommy issues. Maximus was inspiring, Lucius was not and that is part of the aura that was missing from this movie.
I didn't really have a problem with Denzel's performance although I don't care for him in that kind of role.

This was ok. Nowhere near as good as the original and i wasn't expecting it to be. Not something I would watch over and over again but something to hold your attention one lazy day when nothing else is on.
On a 3rd re-watch:
Kinda undermines the sacrifice made by Maximus by hiding Lucius and essentially condemning him to live out in the streets.With the Emperor dead in 1st, none of the other Senators stepped up? They all went back to business of corruption and backstabbing and trying to get Lucius knifed up as the rightful heir to the throne? That doesn't make sense, he was legit royalty.
Also makes Lucia and Maximus look like trash by creeping with each other while they were married. Just hate when OG characters are trashed in legacy sequels...
What was lacking here was a menacing villain to counter Lucius, but I didn't get that vibe at all from the Emperors and Denzel.
It is was a bit scattered and seemed there was a lot cut in the editing bay.
