Nah, 5yr old? Little girl? Kids do enjoy tablets. For $100 or less you can find a decent deal on a tablet. Maybe a used iPad 2?
You didn't like a Kindle suggestion but a Kindle Fire is basically a $100 iPad and the FireHD I think was rated just as highly as an ipad
The other thing you shunned, Nintendo. Kids will love any gaming system. BUt the consoles is where Nintendo is still king amongst children
I love children, and have been around a whole bunch of different kids over the last 4/5yrs and universally they all LOVE nintendo Wii.
Games that seem lame like "Go Vacation" is the BOMB to these little fukkers.
WHat Nintendo does is still make games FOR KIDS. Their top games can be played kids and adults. Those types of games are not as popular with the older crowds, but you cannot go wrong getting a Wii or WII-U
