This is the other thing I just thought of too. The article is coming from a place of a fan of good music first. Thats sometimes lost.
Lets look at what's been the typical artists complaint about the suits ie the label.
1. The suits take away the creative control and force us to make cookie cutter shyt.
2. And if it works, they rape us on the money and plaster our faces on everything from lunch boxes to whatever, and they give us pennies.
What jay has basically done, openly admitting, is he took away his own creative control and put himself in the position to basically rape himself in the way artists typically been raped by suits. The story has a certain David and Goliath, Robin Hood aspect, plus the racial aspect being a black man, so he's a heroic figure even though depending on his next album his legacy as an artist is in jeopardy in my eyes. But again, the social and racial component to the story makes it feel excusable, that's the jayz conundrum.
^^do you even know what you're talking about?
what you said was completely false.
normal situations
Rapper- wants to make music A.
Label- tells rapper we need you to make this kind of music(music B) because the record needs to go platinum. the share holders need that money and we know music B gets heavy club play and radio play for a bigger push of the album.
Rapper is FORCED to make Music B even though thats not his style or the lane he wanted to go in.
fans - get another cookie cutter album/rapper.
What happened with this jigga and samsung situation.
Rapper wants to make music A
Corporation just wants to put rappers face with product no matter what music he makes.. corporation pushes rapper to a platinum plaque before the album drops. releasing the corporation from having the ability to monitor or tell said rapper what kind of music to make. Corporation is not in business to sale records. they are in business to sale phones.
corporation is not a shareholder for rocnation or even any distributor that distributes roc nation music. again meaning this corporation doesnt care what kind of music jay makes.
fans- we end up getting the kind of music that said rapper wanted to give to the fans.. music A.
jigga can now rap like common if he so well chooses. and no matter what he has gone platinum.
The only reason he would dumb himself down on this coming album is because he's afraid of losing the ability to have a "HIT" song getting heavy play all over. but that has nothing to do with a corporation pimping him or him pimping himself, etc
jigga just flipped it for the artist, for the fans.
