I mean...whats the alternative? The whole point of having the "bail-bond" part of the justice system is to provide SOME recourse for legal rights and imprisonment
It expires after one year too. I had to pay mine twice when my case dragged on.
Do what we do here and bail or remand people depending on the severity of the crime and how much proof there is
It sounds crazy to me that potential murderers and rapists can be bailed if they have the right funds.

They misuse it with. A lot of times people get high as bonds like OP said and be forced to play ball with the D.A. cause they stuck. Certain spots are ridiculous. I got a $50,000 bond in Duval county on a dope charge on a first a offense. That shyt is high as fukk. Luckily I had bond money on deck
but between the $5000 bond and the lawyer I paid 10 racks fighting that case. And that shyt took 9 months before I was sentenced so I would have been locked up for that whole time. They was offering 5 years and when you locked up fighting your case them deals be looking sweeter. Bali money better than bond money, but nikkas ain't got bond money let alone bail money
The problem is difficult.
On one hand, releasing someone on their own recognizance can lead to retaliation, fleeing, or a worse crime.
On the other hand, there's clearly a complete disregard for the freedom of people who are innocent.
Getting rid of the system completely is good, the next best thing would be bail based on income.

Pre trail service programs to determine if you're actually a threat to society or flight risk. A lot of poor ppl in jail are forced into plea bargains because they can't afford bail. The 10-15% bond fee is also a scam because you don't get back that regardless the outcome of the trail. So say you're eventually found innocent and you paid 500 on a 50000 dollar bail, well you just got penalied for nothing. Its another way to extract money from the poor.
