Every Nexus phone(Nexus S, Nexus One, Galaxy Nexus) before the Nexus 4 costed $500 off contract each. The Nexus was never meant to be affordable.

I mean why would they go back to that pricing model tho? nexus 4 & 5 were there most popular phones for a reason.
With Project Ara, Android One, and Motorola devices coming, Google likely felt there isn't much of a need to make the Nexus cheap anymore since there are other cheap offerings with the same benefits. If you have a Nexus 5, your should be good for another year or two anyway.
And there's also a chance that this may have to do with the Nexus 6 being available on all US carriers. Google may have had to stop subsidizing their phones to be allowed to put their phones in carrier stores.
