Point blank , google is dumb as fukk for that. If you're not going to allow for the use of SDCards...create a viable program to transfer files between all platforms. That simple.
What I've done is connected my old phone and new phone to my my work computer at the same time. I'm then copying and pasting my files between the two. Problem solved.

Not sure why it wouldn't work if you had the right drivers and make sure that mtp is set on the phone.

My bad if it's completely broke for the pixel, but it's even what they recommend. It worked for my HTC 10 running 7.0.
