Yup, I say this as STEM gang and I'm looking at the international competition in the face every single day and see what these companies are doing. We just hired someone from Colombia for example.

If this country really cared about American education and American citizens, then it wouldn't let these companies hire immigrants.

We know that isn't going to happen though.

Once those countries caught up to our schools' STEM programs (happened around mid 2010's when ABET started reviewing more International programs), it was a wrap.

Have they really caught up or are they just cheaper to employ? I've seen and heard of so many horror stories about overseas tech labor. Not to mention working alongside them for years. And they aren't held to the same standard as workers in the US.

You look at a school like The University of Oregon, respected name, but ranked 1000th+ in the world when it comes to science, engineering and math. There are now so many students and competition out there today worldwide.
What used to only be a competition of about 340 million in the pool is now 8 billion people to compete against.

Additionally, ABET is the engineering standard America has used for decades and only in the 2010's have more consistently started to look at international schools' programs. Now, many schools around from around the world are inspected and confirmed by ABET to meet those same standards. If you filter for non-US countries you can see how many have only been reviewed in the last decade:

That just basically means competition about to get thick, we're only seeing the beginning of it. Those who graduated internationally from an ABET school that was accredited in 2020 are about to hit the job force starting either next year (most likely the year after because most engineers will take 5+ years).

Remember, ABET is the reason why many engineering schools without big names around America are seen as legit engineering schools like any private university because they've inspected the curriculum. That's why some state schools engineering graduates will get hired over some kid who graduated from the same program at USC. As long as an engineering program is ABET accredited, the program is deemed legit (unless it's like a Caltech or M.I.T who don't bother with ABET because everyone knows they're top 10). Now that same institution has started to look at schools outside the country and deemed their education on par with the standards we have here.

The big kicker here is that many of these schools are free for citizens of those countries to attend. So they get the same ABET degree, but don't fall into $80k of student debt. The can make their money work for them right when they get hired, while people here are paying back their bullshyt loans. Again, if this country really cared about it's citizens like that, this wouldn't be a problem.
