I read this can be caused by lightning strikes in the high elevated areas, it can be caused by a vehicle if it has a chain that drags causing a spark.

I'm sure it could also be purposeful, but I feel like it could be a "natural" cause.

It's sad to see, but a reminder that the earth doesn't care about us or even know we exist, honestly
