The criticism of the scene posted is valid and the criticism of the overall portrayal of Black people is to. Although, I think David Chase/the writers had a curiosity about the Black experience just didn't know how to do it well on screen and it came off clumsy/racist a lot. But I digress, after taking a step back the show was perceived as this edgy anti-hero character study while it was airing and being super popular. But really now you can see after the hype had died down it is just a dark comedy and tragedy about a way of life that is at its end.

Tony had massive luck during the course of this show. That scene of the failed hit is one of the many moments. It was funny seeing him bytch over his gambling issues later on when he seemed oblivious to the times where his miraculous luck (and plot armor) bailed him out of plenty fukked up situations.

That shyt all ran out in the finale though.

People on here defend it all the time but I been calling this show out for shyt like this.

Even the way some of the black characters dress and talk is straight out of some stereotypical racist playbook.

There's a reason for that...it shows they are thugs, racists, and outright sociopaths. You're not supposed to be cheering for them. Meadow was the only one who had any real sense and was progressive.
I’m not talking about the opinions of the Italian gangsters. I don’t care that the characters are racist. What I have a problem with is the depiction of the black characters themselves.

It’s one thing for the white characters to say racist shyt. It’s another for the show to portray black people in a racist way. From what I see, The Sopranos does the latter way too much for me to bother with it.

There are anti black moments in Godfather, Goodfellas too. Sonny saying they knew they use the money to buy "new Cadillacs" as he's making the steering wheel motion or Henry saying the only ones that get caught are "n1gger stick up men who are asleep at the wheel...I got things organized with these guys". Dismissed and seen as guys who are drawn to toys instead of taken serious as criminal partners.
I’ve seen Godfather and Goodfellas, I’m well aware of this. That’s why I said I stopped watching mafia movies. Too much racist, anti-black shyt.

Yeah they mostly showed other criminals except for the cop episode with Roc.

For comparison’s sake, many of The Wire’s black characters are also criminals. But we see that the most successful of them - Avon, Stringer, Joe, Marlo - are nuanced, intelligent, and transcend their stereotypes. They’re not there for white characters to make fun of, and then for the narrative to justify said white characters by portraying them as inefficient, bumbling idiots.

Sopranos is GOAT 10000% but there’s def some embarrassingly unrealistic scenes and lots of broad daylight murders with no attempt to disguise the hitters identity.

I remember the scene where Vito kills Jackie jr. he comes out of thin air (ironically enough) and when he shoots the gun it doesn’t even cycle.

almost every group was shown in a satirical sense:

wannabe goomba Italians

Hispanic and black “thugs” and gangbangers

WASP-y annoying white characters (the guy + wife that witnessed Tony killing Chris’s shooter), the racist dad that got carjacked

ultra pompous elitists like the PhD friend of Carm’s parents, the lawyer Tony tried to buy the house from

The only positive portrayal of blacks was the preachers father in S2 and the black surgeon from S5

I can’t think of many ppl who were portrayed in a positive light on the show
