He can't be traded without his approval. Why trade for a player now when he's going to be a free agent anyway after the season and you can just sign him anyway? Aren't his Bird rights gone too?

Just noticed that. Hopefully a deal can emerge where he would be happy where he ends up at and we get something good in return. When good teams have unexpected injuries they make desperation moves, although unlikely, this is always a possibility.
It's not a possibility. If he's traded the team that takes him gets no bird rights. They can't exceed the cap to resign him. Since he has veto power over any trade the only teams that can trade for him are ones with enough cap space to sign him after this season outright. The same teams that didn't even make an offer to him this offseason. Monroe wants too much. He's a great stat line but not worth the kinda pay he'll want. That being said he does have some value but the Pistons will get nothing from him now.

There is no guarantee you will get him in the offseason. Having him on your team for half a season showing him your plan for him gives you a better chance at resigning him than just biding for him in the offseason.

I think he'd be a good fit for a lot of teams on max money if he wasn't a complete trainwreck on defense.

About 16 teams will have the cap space for a max contract next summer
And Monroe is one of the top FA next year, no question. He would beast in a front court with a good defensive mid range shooting big man IMO, like Ibaka, Horford, Marc Gasol, probably even Al Jefferson

Considering how many of these bigs are being inflated by the market he will get a favorable deal either way barring injury.....plus he's only 24 with that offensive skill set some team will bite fa sure....teams just need to realize he's more suited as a center than PF where they can hide his bad D...

I'm OK with him being gone and having the cap space. Even if we can't pull in big free agents it allows us to be involved in trades and pick up some pieces, especially as a 3rd team to help complete trades where the main team doesn't have enough space. Definitely would have preferred to get a 1st Rd pick at least for Monroe. Though the chances have clearly decreased it's still possible. One of the better teams looking to strengthen their squad for the playoff run may be willing to give up a late pick for a possible rental with the off chance that he may sign with them longterm. And Monroe may be likely to accept a trade to a contender, especially since he's never been to the playoffs.
