Going to the airport was like Disney World since he only did it ever so often.

I also took joy in taking taxis and eating airplane snacks.

Going to vacation ain’t something we did often like other families.

A post I saw on Reddit got me thinking about putting my childhood into perspective. Currently, I’m in a very very good position in life and I don’t take it for granted on bit.

I live in the upper/upper-middle class side of town, around solid blacks and others, drive a functional vehicle with little to no repairs needed, bought my lil bro a brand new car and paid off my dad’s whip, and am paying for school outta pocket.

Looking back at things, I realized I didn’t come from the best upbringing (son of immigrants), though there was beauty in the struggle.

I live in FL. Feel free to drop some stories. No violence.

Yes Life is not fair and Life is hard. My maternal grandfather poppy rest in peace he did not have the best upbringing :( Yes take nothing for granted in this Life. Life is too short to not be grateful.

Getting my cousin hand me downs was :blessed:

Pinto beans and cornbread was the meal for kings
:mjcry:

A couple dollars of summer sausage and some saltines got ya boy through tough times :lawd:

shyt was tough as hell growing up. it was what it was. Things are still fukked up in the delta.

In 2016, 79 percent of Mississippi households are not connected to internet at speeds defined as broadband or higher. 22% of people in the state don't use the internet at all.

Realizing the internet is a luxury in 2018 is crazy.

But I'm good now.. three rental properties, 4 bedroom home, and two degrees later :win:

Living with other people. We lived with 5 different groups of people before being able to afford our own apartment, which we lived in for almost 10 years. At our worst, we lived in a friend’s trailer park while she was away half the year. shyt fell and flew apart during Katrina and we lost a lot, including a car my mom put a down payment on.

Sugar water and pizza from my dad’s job was a regular for dinner.

Can definitely relate. There was a time some years ago where me and my mama had to stay with some cousins in the hood; even though I never realized we were basically already in "the hood" ourselves before then; it was regular to me. Here in Columbia South Carolina, pretty much the whole city is hood/poor as fukk--apart from maybe like two specific little areas that I know of

Feeling that despair when our mama got sick and couldn’t work for a year and knowing everything can come crashing down at any point after that. Fortunately, we had good people who cared.

From London, we have free healthcare so that was a burden of our shoulders, which is good because in poorer areas your likely to get stabbed.

jokes aside seeing fiends, and nikkas slanging as soon as you step out of da yard is terrible, and i thought that was normal till i grew older. :scust: I was smart enough to not get involved tho :jawalrus:
Got stabbed up when I was young not fun.. Also from London

But yh normal shyt, didn't have cable or Internet til 2007.single parent normal shyt

Moved around the city a few times, me and mom never really had much

Lived in a trailer park from 9 to 14, when I was still an only child. Lived here from 4th grade close to 9th

Middle school was hood as fukk. Fights on the bus every other day, cussin out the bus driver, apparently somebody stole money out her purse one time, kids watching porn on the bus on their phones, 7th graders having sex, gangs, just regular shyt. Didn't really have too much trouble, I was that quiet, shy kid for the most part. I was cool though. I loved middle school

Trying to figure out I'm hearing fireworks or gunshots....

Ramen noodles. If there was nothing else to eat, there was always chicken flavored ramen noodles. Throw some sugar on top (plus the seasoning), that shyt tastes glorious :ohlawd:

My room was small AS fukk. My bed literally took up over half the room, you barely had any room to walk thru there. The bathroom was basically the same size, if not slightly bigger. THAT'S how small it was.

Had to throw the bed sheets out one summer cause the ants got a lil too comfy

You're in a deep sleep and you feel something cold crawling up your leg/back...:sadcam::sadcam: This happened to me and my mom quite a few times, where we would wake up cursing/yelling because the roaches wanted to get cozy on us...And I don't mean just regular little roaches, I'm talkin about those big, FAT, ugly, walnut-sized, waterbug mothafukkas that fly around and make that lil noise when they hit the wall :damn::damn::damn:!! Killing those was a sport at home. One of them mothafukkas ambushed me one day and fell on my head as I was walking out my room; had me fighting the air, lookin like an African tribal dancer lmao.

Our dog Dino would be chained up outside, and every once in a while I'll have to untangle his chain from the trees out there. I used to always be crying mad at my mom cause she would barely let him in the house, even though he was a big ass dog (Pitbull/Lab mix). The dog next door would always be eating his food and fighting him. I would run my lil skinny ass out there crying mad and try to fight the lil nikka off (he was a tiny lil Boxer). I hated that lil b*stard, hearing my innocent dog yelping :mjcry::mjcry:.

The dog breaking off the chain every other week and me having to chase him around the neighborhood and drag him back home.
That was my best friend, he lives with my grandfather now

At some point we had no cable for about a year, I think. PBS Kids and ETV :wow::wow::wow:
We had some crazy fun times tho, I miss it. I never realized we were "poor" or "from the hood" until my mom broke it down to me years later
