Why do so many groups start off great, then die off?

Is it the way alerts are set or the fact that they are not main forums?
Are the mods to blame for not keeping interest or is it the members or subject matter?

Basically, what are some tips to make and maintain a great group?

People grow and change so it's only a matter of time for groups with a small/limited topic of discussion to begin with.

The best way to maintain a group is to have a strong, sensible leader at the helm who cracks the whip on the slacking jabronis. Everybody post somethingor they will get a nice little package in the mail, and it won't be flour in the envelope.

Two ideas:
1. One is a Q&A advice group, focusing on improvement & empowerment. So it will deal with financial freedom, health & fitness, conflict resolution, etc. However, I feel like that's what we have the forums for.

2. Another women's group. We already have two, so I was trying to see if I could help revive and revamp the dead one.

I'm still brainstorming but I would like to hear more suggestions.
