Grisham hit .216 after the all star break and everyone knows that he’s not a long term solution. Bandaid fixes over trying to develop your top prospects is how we got here in the first place :aicmon:. On top of this, the other reason we hate this move is that they’ll use his money as an excuse to not get a guy who will be a long term solution. Next year’s team has roughly $55 million committed to Grisham, DJ, and McMahon. Hideously bad resource management.
Grisham also had an 804 OPS. I don't understand this thing about dunking on Trent, when there's way bigger issues on this roster.

How many prospects did the Dodgers develop this year? Their top two prospects had 250 PA's combined. Andy Pages was replaced by Kike Hernandez and Tommy Edman in last year's WS. Dalton Rushing was replaced by Yankee legend Ben Rortvedt. 36-year old Miguel Rojas is the reason they went B2B. The core of their team in their 30s, they ain't got time for player development. And I'm gonna let you in on a little secret: Not a single contending team would've replaced Trent with Dominguez.

You can't do two timelines. The idea of "reps" at the pro level is a myth, unless it's a last-place team. It can't be "We can't waste Judge's prime" while also, "but we also have to develop so and so in HOPES that they become good."

Smith is their own guy. Muncy they got as a young castoff from Oakland. Pages is their own guy. Their system is how they got Glasnow and Betts through trade and despite being 2 time defending championship with a bottomless pit of money, they still value developing prospects. That same Dalton Rushing they can flip at any time for something useful. The difference between them and the Yankees besides their utilization of their systems is that the Dodgers are gonna spend, spend, spend. The Yankees have told you in 180 languages that they're simply not gonna to those lengths. So the pivot to that in theory should be, developing your own players so that if they pan out, they don't have to pay them crazy amounts of money, which would alleviate their payroll concerns. But Volpe aside, they're not that interested in doing that either unless they all produce like Judge's rookie year. So then they get these stupid half measures where the money they do spend, gives them little ROI whereas they coulda gone for bigger free agents had they had young controllable assets who they can develop.

So instead of hoping these prospects develop, we're hoping to get lightning in a bottle from players who haven't shown it to that point or we're trying to wring out 1 more solid year from an older vet who we know is washed. Positional clusterfukk aside, people are upset because Grisham is $22 extra million bucks they wanted to use for something else but now can't. It means for someone they really really like in Jones, we're not gonna see him get everyday reps, if at all, til he's a 26 year old rookie. They're generally indecisive with every young guy that passes through except Volpe. The franchise can't cry poverty and eventually lobby for a cap and then scoff at the one justifiable way to keep costs down and still produce talent and I've told you why the organization and the fanbase is in lockstep with that philosophy: because they think developing guys is for some other team to do and we'll just get em later.

I'm not of the belief of "we're wasting Judge's prime." That ship has sailed, whether it's ownership not wanting to spend money or make changes to better identify young talent, coaches teaching the dumbest philosophies, generally dumb ass players, and our captain not helping his own cause by either coming up short himself or befriending bums he thinks are necessary. Judge got 6 more years here. If he happens to win while he's here, great, but it's not gonna happen with the half measures and general lack of vision this team has. If it's that important, go get Tucker anyway. Go sign Imai. Go trade for Skubal. Spend like the Dodgers, but they won't do that, so if they're not going all out, it's not worth it to then watch a directionless trash Yankee team after his prime because they spent too much time investing in half measures.

Their current way of approaching free agents is gonna take them right back to 2013-16 status once Judge declines. That’s the problem. You can’t build a contender when you refuse to go all in on stars in free agency & also glue your prospects to the bench for journeymen. It’s how they go into year after year with constant turnover on the roster while also never fixing the same issues that plague them for years on end.

Interesting to hear Cashman bring up Tucker multiple times. Gives me a little bit of hope lol

Let us be delusional for a week about a Tucker, Grisham, Dominguez, & Judge outfield with an infield that has Bellinger, Rice, & allegedly Corey Seager since the rangers apparently want to dump his contract :lolbron:

The bold is hilarious, coming from the same guy that was okay not spending for Aaron fukking Judge. I'm not trying to hear this at all

This is why the Dominguez discourse is funny: Y'all are being dishonest. You said he should be getting “reps” because Cole and that other guy aren’t around, but you was ready to throw him out there in last year’s playoffs, at a position that you’re now telling us is not his “natural” position. Instead of seeing what's transpiring, ya get to gaslighting and excuse-making, very much like Cashman does with Volpe. Two peas of the same pod.

I’m tired of coddling these mid ass prospects. It took Roman Anthony 18 games to get acclimated to the majors. Tyler Soderstrom, with no innings of experience in the outfield at any level , becomes a GG finalist in the position that this so-called generational talent needs multiple years of “reps” for? Hilarious

The alternative to playing Dominguez was playing a career .218 hitter who’d batted under .200 each of the previous 3 years and hit .180 for the last month before the postseason while he was on an expiring contract.

What’s funny about @holidayinn21 mentioning Oakland is, they’ve developed much better talent over the last 10-15 years than the Yankees have.

The following players were either drafted or developed by the Athletics organization and became solid full time players:

Sonny Gray
Max Muncy
Chris Bassitt
Matt Olson
Sean Manaea
Matt Chapman
Sean Murphy
Marcus Semien
Frankie Montas
Tyler Soderstrom
Mason Miller
Jacob Wilson
Nick Kurtz
And I’ll even throw Shea Langeliers here.

This is the Oakland A’s we are talking about.

I’m pretty sure Gerrit Cole and Aaron Judge combined make more money than the entire Athletics roster.

Brian Cashman hasn’t produced 1/4 of the talent Oakland has in that time.

This is outrageous.

It goes back to what me and @tremonthustler1 were talking about and Cashman needing to play washed up vets and journeymen over prospects because he doesn’t want to trust rookies to save his job. 3 years ago he wasted an entire season with Josh Donaldson at third base knowing he was finished and we had to wait an extra 2 years to find out if Oswald Peraza was any good which meant wasting most of 2025 on him and then getting another washed up vet who isn’t good to replace him on a big contract so they’ll use that deal as an excuse to not play their next prospect at third. Same problem every year.

Was that the year Correa and Seager were on the market?

I could be mistaken but I remember feeling the Yankees should have gone after one of them.

Correa ended up being a disaster in the long term but Seager led the Rangers to a World Series.

Correa, Seager, Story, Matt Olson, Freddie Freeman in the offseason and Castillo & Soto at the deadline. Cashman instead chose a breaking down Anthony Rizzo, Joey Gallo, Donaldson & IKF in a package deal, waited until the deadline to get rid of gallo and to bring on Benintendi, passed on trying for Soto & Castillo in favor of trading their #3 starter for an injured Harrison Bader, and traded prospects for Frankie Montas who he knew was hurt and needed surgery. By August a pickup on the margins like broken down third baseman Matt Carpenter was being asked to play right field because he chased role players instead of stars.

The A’s :mjlol:

They’ve been stockpiling 1st round picks and top prospects for a decade and ain’t done shyt with it. Why didn’t they develop Rooker as an OF then? Why is this Soderstrom’s third position in five years if they’re so great’ I’m not trying to hear this either

The Rays are the only team that does player development right now

A lot of like the sound of developing players, but yall ain’t true believers.

Because if that’s the case, let’s give Volpe some grace, he played with a torn shoulder, he’s a GG winner and showed he could perform in the playoffs. Let’s bring up Vivas once again. Or do we pick and choose?

Volpe had a 3 year sample size of being horrid with no improvement and getting worse at several things. He was statistically the worst hitter in baseball since his debut. Most prospects are better than him or they get the hook faster at least. Either pay big for stars or play young guys. Filling the roster with journeymen and washed up vets leaves this team the equivalent of what the hornets would’ve been if they traded Chris Paul to the lakers which is a team with a 45 win ceiling who won’t go further than the 2nd round until the bottom falls out and the whole process starts again.
