Sam is great at embodying a scene with the proper amount of intensity. He’s also underrated when it comes to comedic timing.

Jamie nor Sam would have brought what Denzel brought to Malcolm X, Training Day or Macbeth.

Jamie is in the next tier with Will Smith, Terrance Howard, Larenz Tate, Chadwick Bozeman (RIP), and a couple of others.

Out of all of them, Chadwick had the best chance to reach Denzel status. He had similar screen presence and natural gravitas. He acted everyone in Ma Rainey out of the fukking room and that included powerhouses like Viola Davis and Colman Domingo.

Will Smith has the talent but almost always chooses roles that rely on his charisma. He doesn’t really push himself as an actor but the few times he has (Six Degrees of Separation, Ali, the first half of I Am Legend) he’s shown glimpses of greatness.

I think Daniel Kaaluya gets forgotten in these conversations. That brotha can act his ass off.

Jamie Fox is talented but he's not half the dramatic actor Denzel is. It's more than his voice, it's his subtleness that he brings, Jamie doesn't have that at all. Watching Gladiator 2 solidified it for me even more, that movie was not great but Denzel with his half hearted accent made it his movie.
