I hate the fact that this thread is made because inevitably, one rapper is going to get downplayed or criticized to boost up the other.

Nas is my GOAT, so I can't place anyone over him. But Guru is arguably the most deserving of being in the elite conversation out of those who aren't normally in it. His versatility in subject matter, technical skills, ability to adjust with the times (his style is timeless while simultaneously sounding up to date with whatever era of Gang Starr you're talking about) and consistency make him an all-around talent. I think people overlook him because of the fact that he just so happened to be in a group with one of the GOAT producers, and his monotone voice make it so that you're not always paying attention to what he's saying. He was never animated or aggressive, but lyrically, he was one of the most underrated.

If you go back as early as Step in the Arena, he was rapping rapping. His bars were like complete sentences while still having a great flow. He never sacrificed the musicality for technicality, and he could simplify his style or go more complex depending on the topic. I never liked the idea of people thinking he was just the guy rapping over Premier's beats and he didn't have that much to say lyrically. He was a lot better than he gets credit for.

On the flip side at least it's Guru. I just hate that we have the mentality of having to put one down to prop another
