To anybody that has been in an earthquake, do they start off so hard that you can't exit a building before it comes down?

Does it shake so hard that you can't keep your balance to exit a building?

I know the magnitude matters, but this is a general question about how hard it is to navigate thru a building if a quake happens?

Prayers to Haiti and the Haitians on the island. I’ll never forget going to DR and having some younger Haitian brehs come up and chop it up with me. Humbling experience. I pray for the families and others on the island.
