I'm going to side with the universityon this 1. They are only tryna prepare black folks that plan on going into the corporate world and at least give nyggaz a chance to get hired. Nyggaz need to keep it real with themselves and admit that the corporate world is a white mans world and unfortunaly we have to "conform" to some of social traditions of corporate america. Its sad but true. I have never personally seen any nygga rockin dreds or cornrows on wall street. Please some1 show me an example bcuz I bever seen that shyyt before. As black folks we already have a strike against us walkin into an interview just by bein black, why give them MFs a reason not to hire us.


I'm one of the most hood nyggaz u can find, but when I have gone on interviews. I take out my earings, jewelry and all that shhyt. I do what I gotta do to get my foot in the door. Some nyggaz wana try to buck the system and say "fucc these cacs,I'm gonna wear my hair how I want" OK do what u want, it hard to climb the corporate ladder, especially the financial/bankin/wall street corporate ladder wearing dreds and cornrows. Its hard enough to get a job. Bcuz a lot of have black names. I do... I have had people tell me that when an employer sees a "black" name they throw that shhyt in the trash. Nyggaz need to wake the fucc up and stop bein so At damn defiant and recognize that u gotta do what u gotta do to get your foot in the door. I'm not sayin let a job change who u are, bcuz at the end of the day, I'm still the same nygga that I've always been, but when its time to get a job, if I had dreds or rows. I'm cuttin that shhyt. Its not the colleges place to tell someone how to wear their hair. Ive been in corporate environments where Muslims have Full on Beards like Santa Clause and pray IN the building. No one says anything, because they cant. Sad the Hampton alumni has turned into cac fearing Cowards.

Its insanity bruh. They are insane and sadly, we have institutions that are supposed to be for higher learning, catering to their insanity. Thats a suspect education.

As fukked up as it is, dreads/cornrow hairsytles ARE frowned upon by alot of corporations. It's racist and fukked up, but it's true.

I was in a Six Sigma Green Belt Class a few years ago and there was this brotha in there who honestly didn't know that companies gave nikkaz the side eye who had dreads/cornrows (he has dreads). He was talking about how he was looked over for some promotions at his company (works for Honda) and was wondering why. This other black woman who was in there with us (works for Dupont in senior management) told him the deal with certain black hairstyles. She said when she started in the corporate world, she was kinda loud with her fashion (flashy earrings, dresses, shoes, etc.). Another senior black exec told her she needed to "tone it down" for her benefit/career advancement.


He was like when she broke it down to him.

We both were like "no one ever told you?
He was like no.

I felt bad for that no one (especially other blacks at the company) never dropped that jewel on him.

These cacs in these companies don't like certain hairstyles. If you are black with dreads/cornows, your opportunity for advancement is . They won't come out and say it, but it's one of those things you need to know. They treat dreads/conrows the same way they treat mullets, mohawks, visible tats. You get the bushes on advancement if you rock those shyts.

Banning the hairstyle while you are paying for an education, especially at an HBCU, is rediculous though and beyond c00nerific. Educate the bruhs and let them know the deal is about it, but let them enjoy their shyt in college. As long as you let students know the "risks" career wise, that's fine with me.

HBCU's used to ENCOURAGE free thinking and bucking "their" system. I mean look at all the frats and sororities that started on these very campuses, they were started to HELP black men succeed and think freely....

Now we stifle this by making them cut their hair while PAYING the school to educate you? I understand the thinking behind it, but like @Rekkapryde said, let em know but let THEM make the decision to cut their hair...

You turn your back on hairstyles our ancestors used to wear (dreads) just to "teach" our kids that they MAY not be accepted? Why not educate them to make GREAT decisions and possibly somehow CHANGE the way corporate America looks at not only their hair, but THEM? I mean, THAT'S true education and empowerment. Teach these young men that yes, they will try and deny you, but YOU have to find a way to make them not only WANT you but NEED you in their corporate office
