maybe im outdated on my information but I thought the point of the steam box was to be closely or maybe a little more priced than xbox1/ps4 ?? $1500 is way out of price range and you could build a superior computer for less than that..

I just dont see how they drop this at $1500 and make any kind of waves :manny:

that's my guesstimate price for that prototype with the i7 and 780. the 300 prototypes they're sending out will have 660, 760, 780, and Titans, with i3, i5, and i7's. but those are just prototypes for testing, and won't be for sale. Valve is counting on other hardware manufacturers (OEM's) to make the actual Steam Machines, which they say will be shown at the CES in January. but I don't think there's gonna be any subsidizing, or anything that will allow them to sell them below cost. or anything that will really separate it from the already existing pre-built market, aside from maybe a little more competition to drive prices down

but you can also build your own, and hopefully someone will release a case like that. I think Valve said they would publicly release their case design

Valve is playing the long-game, and not trying to compete with consoles out the gate. first they're just trying to get their foot in the door of the living room

I mean Valve is a billion dollar company as well and might have better relationship with nVidia :manny: I can only hope at least :manny:

I just don't see how it could work with the fact it uses off-the-shelf parts. who's gonna pay full price for a gtx 780, if they can get one cheaper, with an i7, in a Steam Machine? it would be suicide for nvidia

man you and I both know nVidia makes them mafukkas for $150 or some shyt..

AT&T sells AT&T brand car chargers for $30 and makes them for maybe 5 cents a piece.. mark up on electronics is high, especially on 780s since most people will spend $200 on a video card before $500+. So maybe Valve cut a deal that they'll buy so many 780s at $250 (these are all bs numbers by the way it could cost less or more to make a 780 gtx I dont really know I just know working with technoglogy companies for years that almost all pricing is complete bullshyt and only jewelry really has higher % mark up..) and nVidia still walks away with millions that theyd never have by not selling the 780s in the first place :manny:

Its just like Alcohol.. you go to the store and buy a bottle of Grey Goose for $40. But it only cost them a dollar to make... Cell phones, cases, chargers etc are no different.. dont see why a video card would be any different :manny:

I don't think gpu's are marked up too much, because they seldom come down very far in price. you can still find websites trying to sell a gtx 560ti for $250

ehhhhhhh :usure: sometimes GPUs drop $200 in price :usure: that 780 GTX has already dropped $100 and if theres one thing you should know about sales its that people aint selling shyt unless its making the money some how

edit: the 560 ti was a rare card and special model (as with all tis) and is no longer being made.

thats like comparing a honda civic to a honda civic SI. While both civics, one is a lot rarer and holds value more because of that.

the regular 560 dropped a lot in price

that will probably be the last price drop of it's run though. they'll try to sell whatever they got left, and then roll out maxwell

again, this isn't just the 780. they have prototypes with the whole current nvidia lineup (660 and up). if nvidia were to get into bed with valve like that, it would also mean their future lineups. again I don't see how it could work with off-the-shelf parts. or even equivalent custom parts, because that's where we're at with the next gen consoles. they're being sold at a loss, because they have a locked down OS to protect their games. someone could buy a Steam machine, install windows, and never even use Valve's service. these OEM's would be undercutting themselves as well if they already make 'gaming pc's'

I think it will be cool to see all the configurations these companies can come up with. I get the feeling everyone from Acer to Falcon NW will be involved. you should open up shop again

Just to use your own example 560 TI you can find a 660 TI for the same price ($250)

its just the market for video cards. And we never know... Valve might take losses in hardware because they know theyll make it up through game sales :manny: again im just wishful thinking

either way I dont see them releasing this for over $1000 let alone $1500

the 660ti never dropped in price, and now it's discontinued, because the 760 dropped at the same price with better performance. even newegg is hoping some dummy will bite on the price of the 660ti's they have left. that's kinda what I was saying, cause the fact they don't even knock $20 off to get rid of what they have left tells me it's probably not marked up much to begin with

I don't see why $1000 would be some sort of barrier. there will be some that are cheaper than that, and some that will be more expensive. I imagine something with an i3 and a gtx 660 could be sold for around the price of the consoles. they've also said they plan to have even cheaper ones that will basically just be streaming boxes. but there's also the option to spend more money if you want. one 780, 780ti, 2 780ti's... the sky's the limit, and why not?

sure enough...

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/me...d-with-steam-machine-prototypes/1100-6415976/

Deep Silver and 4A Games announced today that Metro: Last Light will be bundled with the 300 Valve-produced Steam Machine systems going out to beta testers later this year. The publisher also confirmed that Metro: Last Light will support for Steam OS and the Steam Controller when they are released publicly sometime next year.

"We are excited by the prospect of bringing the ultimate Metro experience, powered by next-gen PC hardware into the living room," 4A Games CTO Oles Shishkovstov said in a statement. "Metro: Last Light will be a great showcase for Steam OS and the Steam Controller."

Deep Silver also released the dedicated Linux version of Metro: Last Light on Steam this week. It supports Steam Play, allowing owners of any Steam version to automatically find the game added to their Windows PC, Mac, or Linux Steam libraries.

Yesterday, Valve showed off the images of its own Steam Machine prototype. Announcements from multiple partners for their own Steam Machines are expected at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, with the hardware going on sale starting in mid-2014.

why wait for valve to build something that can be built now? miniITX case and board is all you need. i got a GTX 780 and a 4770K inside a case that's smaller than the average home theater av receiver. sure it cost almost $1400 to put it together but does anybody really think a similar spec Steam Box is gonna cost any less?

Basically... This is simply looking like the easy way for someone who don't feel like building. Just buy it premade with SteamOS on it which is comparable to one of the console os's with more freedom and call it a day. All I care about at this point is to see the benefit SteamOS will bring to games if it does and the controller but then again why install SteamOS on an existing system when you can just boot up steam in BPM?
