It's wild you say that because I've been saying the same, for years. The weirdos changed Nas's direction, musically. They hated Hov so much, that they wanted him to be the anti-Jay-Z. So he started making a lot of weird sh*t. It just seemed like he purposely stopped making the kinda sh*t he was before to be the opposite of whatever Jay was doing. And the music got weak.
The Jay haters definitely f*cked up Esco's catalogue after '99.
