Constant check downs in the NFL is ugly as shyt too, but people gonna do what works
Harden to the rim has 4 benefits:
1) Gives him the opportunity at an uncontested shot
2) Gets the best opposing defender into foul trouble
3) Gives Harden a chance to catch his breath when playing extended minutes
4) Allows the defense to get set on the other end if he makes the second. This is additionally important because the Rockets struggle in transition defense.
The only downside is it isn't "visually appealing"
But Harden is already the most criticized player in the league. There's no reason whatsoever for him to care about that

This....plus his step back is usually to his strong hand/shooting hand (his left)...whereas a lot of right handed shooters tend to step back to their off hand to gather and shoot( their left)...
