There was a black community in lower Manhattan where Wall St. is currently located. In fact, it’s in the site of an old slave market. Trinity Church Wall Street was built by slaves. Blacks however could not worship at Trinity, I believe, so they built their own church, St. Phillips, up in Harlem.

History of Harlem as detailed by Manning Marable . I posted three pages of the book "A Life of Reinvention" pages 65-67. The book had several duck tales about Malcolm X's life, but the history of Harlem was told in a pretty straight forward fashion. Begins on last paragraph of 1st page
