Has a DPOY ever been exposed so badly as Rudy Gobert?

Not to mention Mark Eaton.
At least when Mark Eaton won, he averaged a ridiculous 5 blocks per game. Marc Gasol didn’t even average 2 blocks and he averaged less than 8 rebounds. Not only that, he was all defense SECOND team that year.

Philly bouls, Trust the Process
One highlight makes y’all forget that D-Rob had a winning record against Dream in his career.

But I thought y’all watched the games.
:coffee:
A career winning record is meaningless in this discussion
Hakeem gave him the BEATS in that series and you know it, more than just one highlight :umad:
Three games over 40 in that series, and a fourth of 39 :umad:

Defensive stats aren't very indicative of defensive ability. Whiteside averaged 3 blocks a year last year and he's not even a good defender really, while Giannis only averaged 1 block/game yet won DPOY and arguably deserved it. Not that I have any basis to compare Eaton and Gasol, just blocks don't give you a great picture.

Bron shouldn't won over Gasol tho. :francis:

Yo, I just checked it out and in his 2nd DPOY year, Eaton got swept in the 1st round to the perimeter-heavy GSW too. :deadrose:

Gave up 123, 99, and 120.

Mullin 33ppg on 55/50/89 shooting
Richmond 26ppg on 58/22/90
Teagle 19ppg on 49/--/86
Higgins 14ppg on 50/35/78

I'm telling y'all. This ain't nothing new. From Eaton to Robinson to Gobert (and I'm sure a lot of other DPOY centers in-between), an elite defensive 5 just isn't going to stop a team of shooters without help. Not that an elite defensive 1/2/3 can do it either (Orlando shot the lights out on MJ/Scottie in 1995, Celtics blew Sidney Moncrief's Bucks out of the water in 1984, Kawhi couldn't even stop the Clippers in 2015).

Basketball is a team game. Something I've said over and over about championship teams is that there's a certain # of roles that are essential and you need someone in each of those roles to win a ring. A title team needs at least one quick perimeter defender and one swingman defender in addition to a rim protector or they're gonna get exposed, and that's what just happened to the Jazz.

I’m aware, but I was just using an example of someone who isn’t a versatile defender by pointing out he averaged a ridiculous amount of blocks. Marc Gasol wasn’t exactly the most versatile defender either and he didn’t even have the stats.

The fact this dude got 3 DPOY awards and Tim Duncan has 0 really don't sit right with me

You should blame the guys who actually got DPOY over Duncan. Gobert's DPOY are completely irrelevant to Duncan's.

The actual problem was Mutombo (2), Mourning (2), Ben Wallace (4), Artest, Camby, Garnett, and Dwight. Those were the winners in the 12 years before TD started getting his minutes reduced.
