For two people to play splitscreen the console has to essentially to run the game twice to account for both players. Even though both players are in the same area interacting with the same enemies, the graphics card has to run both screens fluidly while the CPU is accounting for both players actions and how they influence the game.

You also have to account for players separating and exploring different areas that the game then has to load simultaneously and display on the same screen. What if player one is inside shooting a bunch of enemies while player 2 is outside in a banshee way up in the sky? The Series consoles can probably manage it, but it wouldn’t surprise me at all if the base current gen consoles make it a near impossible task. I think OG xbox 1 can only play this game at 30 fps as it is:picard: Meanwhile Series X can seamlessly swap between 60 FPS & 120FPS at any time in the menus.

Along with the rise of online gaming, I think this is the reason why splitscreen gaming has somewhat died in the past several years. Most games are doing too much to have a legit split screen experience. The few games that are splitscreen nowadays typically aren’t very graphically taxing, like Borderlands. Gears 5 has splitscreen co-op but those are more linear levels with much less mobility throughout combat. You’re not using the grappling hook to quickly repel 3 stories up and jumping around climbing anything you see in a large open area

they shouldn't bother with splitscreen. most people want to play co-op online

I feel like if you can have multiple enemies on screen why can’t you have the extra co-op friend ? It can’t be that big of a deal

I hate to defend xbox but its actually a lot of work to work co-op into single player games. There’s a guy offering modders 10k to make botw co-op

The game only renders Whats in front of the player so if you have two people on screen at once it has to do it twice, which is taxing on resources, and wouldn’t be able to maintain the frame pacing the game has now, especially for open world.

hasn’t halo had co-op since the first one ?

I’m assuming that with online you would only be rendering the game once on your machine so why would it matter what the other person is doing ..

1. Halo 5 didn't have co op.

2. My guess would be since the game is both open world + based off of upgrades(valor points) n map pieces unlocked, they had trouble balancing this for 2 players, even online. certain abilities n areas n vehicles are unlocked based off the side shyt you do, unlike other halos where everything is set for each player at the start of each mission. example: player 1 unlocked this part of map n is ready for the 2nd part of that side mission storyline, while player 2 aint done shyt n aint filled the prerequisite for the next part n lacks the same weapon/vehicle upgrades.

^^^^^^^^that aint a fact by the way, just my own personal speculation.
