We really gonna act like folks werent obsessed with appearance before social media tho

Like for real for real?

Social media is just another (of many) opportunities for people to hide their true selves

The question isn't whether vanity existed before social media.

It's whether social media has accelerated the problem.

I think it's clear and obvious that it has.

It is, b.

Manufacturing public opinions where none exists out of thin air is bullshyt
What does marketing have to do with manufacturing public opinions? The public is free to decide what opinions it forms on matters.

Not contrarian, just right.

And this article/stance is contrarian. Most folks like and use social media.... the people who talk about how "evil" it is or how they don't use it are die hard contrarians.

Not to mention there are so many goofy ass holes in the story.

Like people never embellished or tried to pump themselves up before social media. Like people didnt "sell dreams" to people they were dating before social media. Like women didn't bring the flowers their men got them to work to show off to their friends. Like single women were never jealous of women in relationships before social media. Like people never engaged in popularity contests (like student council board members or other bullshyt) before social media.

All social media has done is document all the self-serving bullshyt people have been doing for all of mankind. Social media is just a tool like anything else... it's how people use it that's the problem. U hear idiots say shyt like "Facebook ruined my marriage".... no, Facebook just documented your marriage getting ruined. Regular human shyt ruined your marriage.

Based on what? How are you measuring vanity?
Based on the dollars being pumped into people/images/programs dedicated to little more than self-promotion.

The popularity of these reality shows and "models" wouldn't be so big if the Big Vanity Machine wasn't in full effect.
If you're denying that social media and trash television hasn't created and accelerated a circular "Look at me" ....ecosystem (for lack of a better word), you're delusional.

I had to delete my shyt after seeing friends faux-stunt on the net but are known bums in real life:why: shyts embarassing

What's the amount? Give me some figures.

And are we gonna act like talentless celebrities never got shine before? U telling me shows like Melrose Place got by on the quality of the acting and writing :comeon: Or big boy bands got huge because of their talent :usure:

This shyt has been in play long before social media. Social media's success is a RESULT of a vain Western society, not the CAUSE.

I said it accelerated/exascerbated the issue.

I didn't say cause or creation.

If you don't think social media contributes to a vanity problem, maybe you can explain why it doesn't.
Because saying vanity has always existed doesn't answer the question.

We know it has existed.
Show that it isn't becoming a bigger issue in today's society with social media.

The point u are making is different from the point the article is making.

The article is written as though social media created vanity. And thats what I take issue with.

To a degree we agree that social media is a tool of vanity. But I still think it's a tool. The way people choose to use it is the problem. U can use a hammer to build furniture or crack skulls. Similarly u can use social media to genuinely connect with people too far away to see in person or u can use it as a defense mechanism for your insecurities. In either case the problem isnt with the tool itself. If social media went away today the underlying causes of its abuse would remain and manifest elsewhere.

This chick that I use to kick it with is straight addicted to IG. This girl will stay up late strolling IG even though she has to be at work by 7am. After seeing everybody faux stunting, she'll feel all bad about her life. I don't think I take enough vacations, I need those shoes, I need that dress, I wish me and girls would sections at the club more often, ...... I actually stop talking to her on that level because of that. I don't want social media to define my relationship.

I got a cousin that be fronting on FB about how great his wife and kids are but dude calls me every other day talking how he wants to leave her because she don't cook, clean, or give up the pus. :heh: And they always arguing and fussing with each other.
