Has there been a multiplayer first person shooter truly built on SKILL in a decade?

if you looking for a skillfull game sadly FPS arent the way to go these days unless your willing to play quake or counter strike (which are still dope and CS just got an update this past year) fighting games moba (Dota 2 not LoL) and rts are the best competetive games out these days

starcraft 2 is an RTS the most skillfull game in the world if your looking for a challenge check that out

my main problem with modern day FPS is the stop and shoot aspect making it wack

check out some halo 1 and 2 vids or socom vids what made them skillful is strafing and shooting at the same time .... you tried to out maneuver your opponent while hitting a moving target

in call of duty its two players zoomed in shooting each other while basically standing still

Yeah, but halo is just kinda bland to me. I definitely see the skill in that game, despite what haters of the series always say. They need to back up and stop trying to CoD the multi though

in general tho, the trend is skillful games are quickly becoming extinct with few exceptions.

companies need to make money, and unless you have a brand name behind a skillful game (ie starcraft), appeal to broader audience and fast learning curve are preferred.

these days add ass gamers play a game for a month at best and then throw it in the bushes...and if the learning curve and skill takes time to learn and perfect, casual gamer will say fukk it right away.

its crazy that halo actually is closer to what i'm talking about but it was the most broken FPS ever when it dropped :heh:....word to the pistol with the powers of a sniper rifle WITH a scope

The H1 pistol is one of the greatest weapons in fps history. It's the best utility weapon in halo history because of its range and how much skill it took to use it. Only a few ppl have mastered it, it's not as simple or easy as you put it. The gun can kill in 3 shots to the head and the best players alive can only pull it off about 45% of the time.

But to answer your question, there hasn't really been too many fps games based on skill in the last 10 years. The only one that comes to mind is Nexuis..it's an arcade game on xbl. It's a fast paced arena shooter that resembles quake. It also has no auto aim (with the ability to turn it on if you wish).

fukk COD

Allow me to explain

traditionally, in all things (sports, poker, washing your car, checkers, weightlifting, etc) you get better as you train and do the activity more often, through a combination of muscle memory, learning and adaptation, and building skill/stregnth.

First person shooters had always followed this pattern as well. All variables were equal (same guns for everyone, same skills for each charactor etc), so you KNEW that when you got killed it was because the other guy was better. He plays more so their skill improved or is naturally better, but its apples to apples. Quake III arena is the purest example of this ever.

Somewhere along the line, and I'll allow you to tie a game to this conversation, it got broken. RPG style power ups and level ups get attached to how often you play and how much you kill....so...people who played more...and did get better...got better weapons and skills...so they became even better...so then they can grow quicker because of the have-nots...so NOW, the guy killing you isn't because he's better because of the stuff I described earlier, hes just better because he has the ability to live longer because of powerups and has a gun you can't get....its inherantly broken.

Fighting game fans, Imagine in street fighter, if it was 100% online, and you started out as SF2 Ryu with NO hadoken, and just a LP dragon punch...

and you had to jump into arena with SSFIV Sagat and Oni, Gouken...and they destroyed you...and its your fault because you need to level up or get better to get hadokens and Shoryueppas and stuff. :upsetfavre:

To the point

This will come across as sour grapes or old man :flabbynsick: talk, but the purity of shooters has been derailed by the stuff I discussed. To this day I say QIII is the goat shooter because when you got railgunned through the top of your dome because someone rocket jumped above you and switched weapons in mid air.......he was better :wow:

your thoughts?

Not really anymore becuz a SKILL based game would exclude alot of people from playing. I always ask when an new FPS comes out, "yo why is their an auto aim function in the options" :heh: I ask why they would even put this in the game.

Well the reason is simply money, like most of the time.If a game takes time and practice to learn, most people wont bother. The more casual players, more sales.

Cod of course, the main example. I love when i hear cats talking about "im a beast in cod" once in a while you run into someone who might actually be good. But 99% of the time, the stats are so diffrent from game to game, its impossible to tell.

I know ppl who quit the game when they have to many deaths and cry like "fukk this, this game is messing up my KD" . Im like ya breh, cuz you are dying :heh:

Cats take COD so serious, not realizing, the game determines most of the outcome.

The last skill game I remember was , Unreal Tournament, a game where your skill could make you untouchable.

:lupe:

Waits for cod fanboys to come in a say "im a COD GOD and ill murder anyone. Oh ya? next game ill spawn kill you 6 times and hear you scream bloody murder into the mic :obama::obama: :heh::heh:

HAWAII
COD4 (promod only, it strips out all perks and makes nades not nearly as strong)
TF2 is pretty skill based
wolfenstein: enemy territory is the epitome of skill based with no bullshyt (ETPRO mod)
QUAKE series (q2, q3, quake live etc)
CS series
PAINKILLER

but you're right, overall there has been almost none. and a lot of these games needed some form of competition mod to make it truly skill based and strip out some of the bullshyt

Good post, its interesting that e-sports is at its most popular when its best games (CS, Warcraft3, Quake, Broodwar) are gone.

Also LoL is quite challenging, don't listen to the DOTA fanboys.

Blame Half-life/team fortress classic/Counter-strike for this. I mean I enjoyed the games. But it didn't take as much skill and the 1v1's were no where near as much fun.I couldn't imagine doing 1v1 with BF3.

I never got into Q3, but I use to play Q2 all the time. Todays games you cant railgun somebody and switch to the chaingun..:gladbron:

I also blame consoles...lol
