A Black Pope would be bad for business, lets be honest.

I can imagine the legions of racist catholics all over in the world (especially in Italy and South America) leaving the religion in droves. The church would likely loose billions in revenue...

Black folk need to get away from even caring about this demonic sect. The fact these cacolics sanctioned slavery makes me have no respect for em...

In Orthodox Christianity, the first Pope was the Apostle Peter (of the 12 disciples). The Pope is the physical stand-in for Christ himself and is the head of the Church (big C not little c). He is part of what is known as the Apostolic Succession (priestly succession in laymen terms). This can be dated back to Holy Week, the Maunday Thursday washing of the feet that Christ performed on his Apostles. Although Pentecost is said to be the birth of the Church, this is the birth of the Papacy.

Oh, and there have been black Popes before, or at the very least Popes from northern Africa.

TL;DR, the is the head of the Church and earthly representation of Christ incarnate.

pope francis was somewhat of a surprise, given that he's latino as much as because he's relatively liberal. conservative movements within the church almost definitely will push for more african leadership since that's becoming their ideological base, and the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate at Georgetown predicts 230 million catholics in africa by the start of the second quarter of this century

here's the church's growth in different regions from 1910-2010

20% growth

north america's growth is boosted significantly by immigration for catholic countries in the 20th century (mainly italy, followed by poland and portugal), and the growth in asia doesn't even compare to africa's.

the church has always been a political entity, there's a reason they have an elected leader. they'll be smart enough to know who to promote and push for in leadership roles
