I honestly think we're being held back from reaching our potential. The government and the powers that be have engaged in a multilayered effort in dumbing us down through standardized education, fluoride in our drinking water, harmful chemicals in our foods that decrease IQ points, mass distractions (i.e.: football, iphones, jordans, reality TV, pop culture BS), etc.
It's the year 2016. We should have flying cars by now. We should have space colonies by now. We should have a cure for cancer, AIDS, ebola, zika, etc. by now. All of these things are well within our capabilities but there are too many obstacles in the way.
How much can we really blame the powers that be? We all are born with brains and minds to shape our daily lives. We have access to information to improve our health and well being. The things you listed are commercially available because there is a demand for them. If the demand changes so will the product.
Really why should we have flying cars by now? Will that make people any safer? Many people cannot drive safely as it is now and I wouldn't want people crashing into my home due to sky rage (see the 9/11 tragedy) or intoxication
Far from it. We have only scratched the surface.
Please elaborate
havent even explored the depths of all the oceans yet, much less space
Do you think we are supposed to?
No. Most humans are still controlled and identify with the content of their thoughts. We have not risen to a higher state beyond our egos and most have not even had a glimpse of their true authentic self.
Building skyscrapers and weapons of war do not signify an advanced ciivilization. How we interact with each other and the planet determines our advancement. When we rise to a higher state of consciousness the technology we create will reflect that as well.
Have we not had a true look at ourselves as expressed through the different actions of people? Everyday there are people who seek to uplift others through different avenues. On the flip side there are people who seek to subjugate and oppress others for their own enrichment economic or otherwise. If our egos are extinguished we may become like vegetables. Most humans in my opinion are controlled more by the thoughts of others through use of laws, traditions and education. We are all programmed from birth in different ways. If anything independent thought is usually frowned upon unless adopted successfully by large groups of people. One idea from our ancestors I enjoy is Rastafari. One thing I do believe is human beings need an outlet for energy that may cause them to harm others.
How would you describe a higher state beyond our ego?
I disagree with you that skyscrapers do not reflect an advanced civilization. A skyscraper is a very efficient way to house human beings, unfortunately most are used for commercial purposes. If our populations were not as big as they are we wouldn't have a need for them in my opinion.
The examples you posted is only technological stuff, which makes sense since the dominating view of "progress" is the western view that the more technology, the better. Not sure, for example, how nuclear technology is "better".
And even in that department I doubt we've reached full potential.
But FOR SURE we haven't reached our potential regarding government, living in peaceful harmonious societies, existing within a context (i.e respecting nature), understand the world from a macro perspective and speaking multiple languages to better communicate with other humans in order to increase understanding.
Basically we're far from knowing how to "advance" without destroying our environment and other human beings. Once we figure that out (if ever), we'll be close to our potential.
I never said nuclear technology was better than other forms of energy production. I agree that we have much more ground to cover with nuclear especially the recycling of the waste produced by the technology.
I put tech stuff just to pop the conversation.
There are many roadblocks to living peacefully when equity is not distributed evenly throughout a society.
Many people today that speak various languages throughout the world as has been the case for thousands of years and view the world from a macro point of view. Increasing the amount of people who use their minds that way is the hard part.
One idea that still puzzles me is money. Money or currency has been used for thousands of years to get people to do things or not do things. I wonder if there will ever come a day when people collaborate on a massive scale towards bettering the life of their neighbors without monetary compensation. My favorite song about this is Peter Tosh's "The day the dollar dies".
I do feel we have reached our potential. We are able to use our minds in any fashion we choose. That doesn't mean we won't be berated, judged or ridiculed before we are praised. I guess we have to take the risk and sacrifice to explore our potential. You are absolutely right about government. It is such a hard thing for humans to get right and will continue to be a struggle.
