I remember I was in New York and my backpack strap had broke. So I go into a store, it was somewhere on the upper west side. I’m in the back looking at these backpacks and I slightly glance over my shoulder and this Mexican dude is behind me, im like wtf, then I say to myself alright you want to play with me. So I take a backpack down and walk it over to the counter and set it down.

Then I turn around and grab a some shirts off the rack and put them on the counter, then some jeans, and toss them on the counter. Then I tell him that’s it. He starts ringing that shyt up, and then tells me my total, then I said fukk you, don’t you ever stand behind me again.
I ripped some more shirts off the hangers as I was walking out.

For me, the associate is either aloof, ignores me completely or they’re breathing down my neck...asking repeatedly if I need help (never an in between) And don’t even dare walking down a deserted aisle, cause they’ll find their way there too. It’s to the point where I get anxiety before entering a store, I don’t like feeling like that.

You shouldn't let their irrational hatred of you precipitate the onset of anxiety. They're the ones who are anxious, compelled to follow black shoppers for no other reason than an obsessive need to treat us with passive aggressive contempt. In instances like you describe, what I'm upset by is when it's black employees who follow me. They couldn't pay me enough to do that. :francis:

Usually those employees aren’t really good at looking casual. It’s annoying because of that. Like, if you were REALLY any good at catching thieves I doubt you’d work in a fukking grocery store. I feel like it’s an insult to my intelligence.

You really wanna risk getting fukked up over this 10$ per hour job?

Most times they keep stepping because I make eye contact with them, but I can tell by how they switch up, they was trying to watch me and got caught being watched themselves. I’ll be damned someone tell me to leave or stare me down.

That’s like asking me to throw hands

It never made me feel good but when it was a black person doing it to me I felt bad for them imagine being paid to follow people around you probably feel like a slave a useless slave in this retail industrial complex

I never worked retail, but I did work at a grocery store when I was in college. One time the managers tried to have me follow a breh they felt was suspicious. I flat out said no i’m not doing that and don’t ever ask me to do that again. Shyt just didn’t sit right with me.
