Have you graduated college? If so, are you working in that field?

Just wondering. I was going to ITT tech but i dropped out. Now I'm having to start from scratch at community college. I'm 27 and I feel it's getting crunch time for a degree. Can't be 34 looking to work with with 21 year olds straight from college and shyt. Idk man, maybe college isn't right for me. I would like to finish but all the traditional routes aren't there. Dropped out of HS at 16, got ged at 21 and has spent the last 6 years working shytty ass job, bruhs. Was going to military but I see I need a few college courses because I have a ged and not Hs diploma. One of the things that has the pressure on me is I've told myself that I don't want to be whipping a lambo at 75 years old like most old dudes, I want that shyt in the next 15 years (aka now). That's not to say that I do stupid shyt with my money because that couldn't be further from the truth. It's just that I've always held myself to high standard for myself and I'm not making this shyt happen right now. Got a A+ business idea that I know would sell like hotcakes but I feel I need a degree for w/e reason to achieve that goal. People (esp black people) always tell me to be grateful I have a job....well, I am but I want MUCH better for myself. A lot of people don't understand that. It's like as a black man, people feel I should content with making 30k or 35k for the rest of my life. fukk that shyt. My dad did that and I'm not doing it. The lambo is pretty much the bar I set and I can't seem to lower it, neither should I have to. Sorry for the long read but I just had to let that out.

Uncertain grounds
the most important thing about college is the networking. it would be a lot easier to get your business idea off the ground with the added connections from different locations that you'd inevitably meet in college.

a college degree definitely looks good as opposed to not having it, but at the end of the day, its about truly knowing and mastering the craft that you are trying to get into. you can succeed without it, especially if you have a good business idea, and the means to put it into action, however.

i graduated and am technically working in my field, but i was more prepared for it coming out of hs than i am now. kinda an anomaly i suppose

Wait why do you have to start all over? None of those credits will transfer?

Also, I can understand that the "lambo" is your dream, but as a barometer of financial well-being, it's a pretty poor metric. As a young dude, focus on real estate and a solid, diversified portfolio. The difference between an Acura and a Lamborghini now will likely mean the difference between retiring in a shack vs a mansion later. Just sayin'.

Yeah I'm pretty sure I'd like to get into a "green" career field and go from there. Just not sure what I'd want to do once there. Mechanical Engineering would be cool because I'm sure that would lead me on the path to building solar panels and working on various energy projects but not many CC colleges offer it so I'm just going to take general education courses starting off.

I was there for less than a month. My student loans were going to be 45k for 2 years had i stayed the course. I left because I did not want to be stuck with student loan debt and all they sold me on was "job placement post-graduation" :childplease: . In this day and age, I'm not trying to be stuck with student loans, I'll rather pay that shyt up front or atleast, 90% of it if I can. The "lambo" saying only represents the lifestyle I want for myself and family. There is no way I'd buy something THAT materialistic before I invested deeply in stocks, mutual funds etc. I just want to have a lot of money for my future family. I want to be able to go out and buy a "lambo". I want my kids to have college paid for. I don't want them to struggle the way I am right now. Is there a means to an end?! There fukking better be...

Graduated with a B.A. in Political Science, which got me a whole lotta nothing. After a few years of jobs that paid ok but went no where, I kinda stumbled into a career in HR/recruiting and have done well. So yes and no.

Sometimes I wonder why I bothered, especially when I pay my god damn student loan every month, but I've realized college is as much about the social aspect, growing as a person and shyt :ld:. At least thats how I rationalize it to myself

yes and yes. Go to grad school if you're worried about not working in the field.

This

That degree comes in handy, you'll get more interviews and phone calls.

Down the line those Student Loans are going to help more than they hurt at the moment. Only if you pay em off on time, 800 credit score comes in real handy. Thats what I tell my self.

You just gotta be creative breh. Thats all I can say.

Like my homie that I went to HS with..he was in theater, he started doing lighting and sound for the school musicals and such. Dude knew the system so well, they had him set up for conferences, he even did the hook up for graduation. Did so well he got 'hired' mind you he was 17..to back and forth from our 2 high schools and hook up lighting and sound...dude networked..was doing it for local theaters and stages in the city that do plays/musicals, conferences/....He's worked at the 2 local arenas from our home town plus travelled to the stadiums where football is played to set up gigs there. I know at some point he was doing community college just to have some backing cause hes said when hes 60 he doesnt want to be climbing above stages to set lights and do that shyt. But that was roughly 7 years ago. He has some cool stories and have met some cool famous people. Like Paul McCartney asked him to make the lights do something crazy when he did a show there, Paul was asking him one on one if he could set up a light so it reflected off of him during a solo, not commanding but genuinely interested and bouncing ideas off this 23year old kid...its just one of the more interesting stories he has told but who would have ever thought that shyt would take him this far?
