Respect the good & understand the bad
Side comment: did anyone really have a revelation when Havoc said this? I thought it was a well known thing. Nothing makes that noise but the stove.

I always knew it was the sound of a pilot at the beginning, but never realized that he flipped it to carry throughout the rest of the beat. I always assumed it was a segue to just a standard, run of the mill hi hat loop. I love the nuances and complexity of its sound now that I'm aware of it.

One of the most original beat related stories in HIp Hop. Havoc is the GOD! :blessed:

In the right setting shook ones still rings off. I heard it at Marvin's in DC last year and the whole spot was going crazy. And it wasn't no old heads in there all 21-27 ish. I fukk with venues like that.

Also I badly want to go to a Jazzy Jeff show. He's always killing it.

Breh, props for posting this set! He's coming here next week (what I totally forget), but thanks to your post I will definitely be there! :blessed:

Reading posts like this make me regret I never got into producing:francis:

Exposing the samples is like a double-edged sword....hiphop fans who grew up with this music get the :krs: while copyright owners of said samples looking at that shyt like :steviej:Hav's genius was that he flipped them in such a way to hide or make them damn near unrecognizable yet still amazing.

There's a lot of threads about the Shook Ones Part II sample since it was found, but I never knew he sampled the fukking stove top and used it as the hi hat.

Right at the beginning of the video you can hear it, and in the 2nd video is Questlove going crazy at 4:46 the first time he heard the sample discovered:

EDIT: Havoc talks about sampling the stove top here at 1:58

I think they even showed a stove in the video.

Either way my mind goes straight to shook ones whenever I'm cooking

EXACTLY!

I don't live in queens no more and everything down here is electric, but not a day went by when I ain't use that stove and hear shook ones
