It’s the same kinda issue that Black business in general has when it comes to garnering support. A certain level/standard has to be set in order to get alumni to give back. I can’t speak for the other schools, but graduating Howard can come with a lot of fukkery and some students are fully over it by the time the leave.
It’s a great experience in terms of the social atmosphere, the facility that challenge mainstream thought, and the tradition of going to a Black institution. In terms of its functionality, PWIs are far better with admissions, financial aid, housing, and a lot of the other things that students have to sometimes protest for so it can be addressed.
HBCUs are very important and valuable to the Black community and even to those outside of the community that attend because they get to learn about the Black experience directly from Black educators instead of in some PWI bubble where it isn’t required for them to even pay attention to things like that. But there has to be an honest confrontation between the community and these institutions. Show the books to real benefactors, if you not moving crooked then things should be easy enough to fix so that alumni have the bandwidth to do more than link for the social experiences every year (i.e. homecoming)
