My kind of CEO

Some of today’s hottest TV shows are brought to you by HBO. If you’ve ever watched Game of Thrones, True Blood, Girls, or The Sopranos, you’ve watched HBO programming. Did you know you can access those same shows away from your TV, from anywhere, with an HBO Go membership? On your iPhone or iPad, just download the free HBO GO app from the App Store (download link) and login to watch your favorite shows on demand.
What if you don’t have an account to login?
It’s become increasingly commonplace for users to share their username and password for HBO GO with their friends and family to get around the cost of subscribing. We know people do the same thing with other membership-based services like Spotify and Netflix. However, what’s different about HBO GO is that their CEO is not only aware of the practice, but frankly doesn’t care. He calls it “immaterial to the business”.
He even goes one step further, saying that customers sharing their HBO GO password can actually be seen as a marketing tool for the company, in that it creates brand awareness and drives sign ups for the service in the long term. Check out the short video clip from BuzzFeed news below to hear the rest of his thoughts on the subject.
