I seem to remember the books and movie growing in maturity and adult themes as the audience and actors aged in real time.
The first movie was for kids, and the final one was definitely not just for kids.

Reminds me of when people try to say Star Wars is for little kids. The first two movies were clearly targeting a teen to 20 something audience at first.
They didn't start angling for kids until they introduced Ewoks and podracing in the third and fourth movie. So is it really for kids or just co-opted to be for kids after it become successful? Either way both cases show that clearly the target audience can change.
