I'm moving to the DC area for work and to study in an LLM Program At American University. I'm searching for an apartment and figuring out whether I'll need my car. I need all the info I can get and I know my brehs & brehettes have wisdom to spare. I'd prefer to live close to the campus and ditch the car if possible.

Any tips on public transportation, traffic, where to eat, shop, places to avoid, etc would be greatly appreciated. :feedme:

You'll probably be on the red line train if you don't want to use the car and live close to campus. I'd probably look at places in Bethesda, silver spring etc. Places to avoid I don't think there's much danger going on. Places to eat there's plenty. You'll find your way around. Metro plus buses helps. Can't remember the website but you can trip plan pretty accurately for time using buses and train so find that info to help with your search

What do you eat? There is really nowhere to avoid, just avoid what you know of as "wrong"...You can be comfortable in Uptown, Anacostia, AND Trinidad if you carry yourself correctly. A lot of people will tell you to move to Mo. County...I lived there before, it's safe and there are also good people there...That being said, I prefer either "The City" or PG...You'll find out why when you get there, breh.
"Carryout" is convenient...tasty...cheap. Don't eat it every day. Try Lalibela (Habesha cuisine)...there's also a dope Vegan Soul Food/Caribbean Restaurant in Mt. Rainier, MD with good prices and dope portions.

Move to Suitland (PG County) and stay away from the ratchets. Rent is low and you'll be near good folks.

Dont listen to this man lol. If you're going to American, that commute would be hell. There's a couple of apartments on Mass Ave walking distance to campus that basically serve as student dorms. Prices will be high especially in that part of town. There are a lot of basement apartments available for rent in that area too.

That area of DC is extremely.....Affluent shall we say so not sure what you're looking for as far as culture but you'll have to venture out to get a more true sense of the city. U Street/Adams Morgan are a short car ride away. You're closest metro stop will be AU-Tenleytown, thats the red line. That'll get you to Dupont Circle and even Gallery Place-Chinatown pretty quickly. There are alot of bars and restaurants, clubs etc in these areas.

Again Idk what type of person you are so I can't tell you places to avoid, but if that's a concern, you won't have to avoid anything in the vicinity of AU lol.

My girl went to AU and I went to Howard so if you got any more questions let me know and I'll answer as many as possible

@Human Torch but everything near Dupont Circle/Tenleytown is so "baby Boule"/"I'm a diplomat's kid"/"What do you do?"/"Rich and gay"....errybody don't kick it like that all the time. I know I got tired of the pretentiousness.

A lot of it but you get some of that HU crowd around there too. You got Ozio's and a couple other spots out there now. Round K street. Really aint shyt in Tenleytown but like i said idk what type of person OP is, so i was giving him/her info on his new neighborhood basically and if he wanna venture out then we can talk Bladensburg Rd, H st, etfc
