Nah, fukk linux at this point. That shyt really provides no advantage to most users in 2015.MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.26 13" (SD/FW) Specs (Mid-2009 13", MB990LL/A, MacBookPro5,5, A1278, 2326*) @ EveryMac.com
Time to spend some money breh. Get you some more RAM.
If you really can't spend shyt, download linux mint
The more important thing is can you upgrade the RAM past 3 or 4 gigs? If you can, do it my 08 MacBook is still running strong with 8 gigs of RAM. With it being an 07 can you even download 10.6? Might be time to upgrade from the white to the aluminum.
He can go all the way up to 8GB.This. Pretty sure he can't upgrade that ram. And if he can it's 4gb max.
He can go all the way up to 8GB.
He does that and adds a cheap SATA II SSD drive and he will be good to go for years.

Either grab that snow leopard installer and go all the way up to 10.6.8 and then go to Yosemite
Or grab a cheap copy of Windows 7 and then upgrade all the way straight to Windows 10 for less than $30
Do NOT upgrade shyt until you get more ram. shyt 4 gigs isnt even enough for Yosemite & El Capitan. You can find ram fairly cheap though for your older models...might wanna throw a TB hdd in there as well (Since if you run low on ram it allocates part of your hdd as 'ram" in the sense.)
