ok so one talking point i see on here constantly is that non-blacks open up successful small businesses (beauty shops, bodegas, nail salons, etc.) in black communities but never give back to the community

if you own a business in a community you're providing goods and/or services in exchange for money - that's a fair exchange as far as i'm concerned

as far as i know these business owners didn't ask for donations from the community to help them open the business

so where does obligation to give back to the community come in? and give back to the community in what way?

if we're talking about hiring people from the community to work in these shops than that I completely understand

if we're talking about paying their fair share in taxes so that some of that tax money makes it's way back into the community (hopefully) than i understand that as well

but if we're talking about charitable donations to fix up the community or whatever than I don't see why a small business owner should be obligated to give back in that way when the exchange of goods and services for money is beneficial to people on both sides of the transactions

now if you as a consumer choose to purchase things that are detrimental to your well being and future than that's on you and you have to hold yourself personally accountable for that as an adult or as someone's parent

if i'm way off base please educate me

peace

They're not talking about 'charitable contributions'. The issue is that many small business owners don't do anything more than provide 'goods' without any 'services'. By 'services' I mean being active in the community in which your business is established moreso than just hiring people from the area. You SHOULD be obligated to give back since without the community's patronage, you wouldn't have a business at all.

ok but if you feel these business owners are not active enough in the community why not just stop patronizing their shops?

i would say that the community won't stop patronizing their shops because the goods and services (by services i mean nail designing etc) are beneficial to the consumer as well

so again if the relationship is equally beneficial than why the obligation to give back to the community outside of paying taxes and hiring people from within the community?
