This is a tough one. if you get any answers lemme know.

I seemed to be surrounded by people way less happy than I am.

Encourage them to exercise. It is seriously the best thing they can do. It works wonders. I speak from experience. Nice of you to look out for your friends.

Sometimes the best solution is time. Time to get better and heal. The things you do would probably be temporary relief unless you followed up with those actions on a regular basis.

Always
Depression isn't something people get over. It's manageable not curable. We can't decide to feel better. And ya'll happy go lucky nikkas are the worst to be around for depressed people because you make us feel even more alienated and weird because you're always telling us to choose to cheer up when it doesn't work like that.

I could walk around on drugs with a fake smile, but that's not genuine. I cycle through all my emotions. Take it or leave it. We ain't changing.

If it's true depression, I would encourage the individual to see a specialist, ideally a specialist of the same race as the individual. Also, don't say feel good things like: "Just fight through it, look at how much you have compared to [insert poor individual or group], keep your head up, it gets better" and so forth. Again, if it's depression, the individual should be mindful that there isn't a cure, so to speak.

Just be present. Be energetic. Talk a lot. Don't give them a chance to dwell on it. Take them places, make them laugh. Anything just to keep their mind going, even if it's only for 30 mins.
