That whole thread is really very informative. It speaks to how we as a society and culture are doing now what we did to Reagan and William F. Buckley and their ilk of neoconservatives. We've softened them and their repulsiveness through the lenses of time because less and less people that vividly remember those days are speaking out or heard. So we base our perceptions on popular opinion. How they are represented in media, and how they represented themselves through memoirs that are about them and that they are involved in.
That's the first step in how we normalize these behaviors and shift perceptions in this country on social issues farther and farther to the right and conservatism. So that when we look back at the people that pushed it farther before we scoff and go "well they weren't that bad, so obviously we can go a little farther than they did as the annals of time have been kind to them, surely they will be kind to me and my ilk".
As someone with a history degree modern discourse fills me with dread at our potential future as a country, a society, and as a global civilization et large.
Honestly, it's shameful they even considered publishing what is essentially hate speech and packaged as "controversial", and yeah, it's apparent they were trying to find the line between racist bile and "both sides" "just a different perspective".

You probably haven’t heard of these trolls, but that is precisely why they are so pernicious. These bigots are not content to harass Jews and other minorities on Twitter; they seek to assume their identities and then defame them.
The con goes like this: The impersonator lifts an online photo of a Jew, Muslim, African-American or other minority — typically one with clear identifying markers, like a yarmulke-clad Hasid or a woman in hijab. Using that picture as a Twitter avatar, the bigot then adds ethnic and progressive descriptors to the bio: “Jewish,” “Zionist,” “Muslim,” “enemy of the alt-right.”
