This part is not true or ignoring something important; These enslaved Africans had their sense of self-worth taken from them by their enslavers first, and then had religion forced upon them, in order to give them a false version self pride second, namely one that included a god that did not look like them. And notably, a god that looked like their terrorizers; in essence they were being infected with a dose of Stockholm syndrome of existential proportion and not any true sense of self-worth.
Many children are subjected to what we in Hong Kong call 'force feeding style' education systems. I'm sure you can gather the gist of that. The reality is that a large number of kids have a middling to low interest in education and it appears, from the general feeling we gather from society, is that this statistic is on the rise. From what I've seen regarding the American educational system, and from second hand accounts, it's heading straight for the bushes/drain in a number of states. But I'm not biased enough to say it's a uniquely American phenomenon though.the south and midwest are on some other shyt from where I stand...
I got a proper education as far as I'm concerned but personally was always interested i history(national and international) and reading since before I was a teen. My math and science skills are nothing to write home about however.
Barring socioeconomic dynamics I think it's up to the child to find their passions.
