I respect his talent...but musically...I just can't listen to that dude.
Its not even his voice...its just the overall vibe of like 80% of his content.
I'm a mellow dude who likes to enjoy life. I'm not trying to hear rappers rap about socioeconomic issues they BARELY understand (lupe, i'm looking at you) unless they're REALLY going to go in and kill the issue (Killer Mike, Lupe [looking at you again], Black Thought, etc).
All that rappity rap rap rap rap shyt gets tiring and frankly...it doesn't make for the best music sometimes, especially when the lyrics are empty. I don't mean empty lyrics in terms of subject matter, since all rappers are are about that bragging/stunt/women/money/etc life, but I mean just lyrics that are just merely there as space-fillers....and thats what it sounds like. Not even Wale does that. Kendrick just makes it seem like dude is trying to fill every syllable with a word for the sake of it. He's like Action Bronson with more credibility.
Of course...theres moments when he kills it. Literally murks it. Most recently is that "memories back then"...where on that he takes his time. he says more with less. Thats the skill of lyricism to me. Rapping for rap's sake kills the point IMO. Its making the song come together and not forcing it that makes better music TO ME.
Music matters to me more than how much people think you can flip words...and lets be frank...dude ain't really flipping words THAT crazily. I know flow encapsulates a lot of people because of the speed, but again, if you focus on the lyrics and how what he's saying gets put together, he's not untouchable...nor is he leaps and bounds ahead of his peers.
Remember this.
